With the Super Bowl just days away, the rest of the league is already shifting into offseason mode - and that includes the New York Giants, who have some big decisions ahead as they look to reshape their roster under new head coach John Harbaugh.
After a disappointing campaign, the Giants are staring down a pivotal offseason, and there’s no question about where they’ll start: wide receiver and the secondary. Both units lacked consistency and explosiveness in 2025, and with the No. 5 overall pick in the upcoming draft, Big Blue is in position to land an impact player. Ohio State’s Carnell Tate - a dynamic wideout with big-play ability - could be a target, as could Buckeyes safety Caleb Downs, who brings versatility and range to the back end of the defense.
The Giants also have internal decisions to make. Re-signing Wan’Dale Robinson would help stabilize the receiving corps, especially with his chemistry already established in the building. But beyond that, there’s a bigger question looming at linebacker - a spot that’s suddenly full of uncertainty.
Micah McFadden, who was limited to just one game last season due to injury, is set to hit free agency. Bobby Okereke, meanwhile, could be a cap casualty depending on how the Giants want to structure their defense moving forward. If either or both are gone, linebacker becomes a pressing need - and there may be a veteran solution on the horizon.
Could Tremaine Edmunds Be the Answer in New York?
If the Bears decide to part ways with Tremaine Edmunds this offseason - a move that would save them roughly $15 million in cap space - the Giants should be ready to pounce. Edmunds, still just 27, missed some time with a groin injury last season, but when he’s on the field, he’s a difference-maker. He racked up four interceptions and a fumble recovery in 2025, showing the kind of playmaking ability that could elevate any defense.
Chicago may ultimately decide to keep him - after all, they just won the NFC North and are built to contend again - but linebacker isn’t always viewed as a premium position when it comes to roster construction. If the Bears opt for a younger or cheaper option, Edmunds would be an ideal fit in Dennard Wilson’s defense.
In New York, he’d step into a linebacker room that includes Okereke (if he stays), Darius Muasau, and Chauncey Golston. That group has potential, but Edmunds would immediately become the centerpiece - a rangy, athletic linebacker who can cover tight ends, disrupt passing lanes, and bring leadership to the middle of the field.
Draft, Free Agency, or Trade? The Giants Have Options
Whether or not Edmunds becomes available, the Giants can’t afford to stand pat at linebacker. They’ll need to address the position in free agency, the draft, or potentially through a trade.
On the edge, New York has some real firepower with Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux. That trio gives them flexibility - and possibly trade leverage. There’s been some buzz around the idea of moving Thibodeaux this offseason, and while that would be a bold move, it could net the Giants a significant return at a position of need.
A New Era, A New Identity
This offseason marks the beginning of the John Harbaugh era in New York. Known for building tough, disciplined teams, Harbaugh’s arrival signals a new identity for Big Blue - one that starts with smart roster construction and a clear vision on both sides of the ball.
The Giants have the draft capital, cap space, and coaching infrastructure to make real strides in 2026. But it starts now - with the right moves at wide receiver, in the secondary, and yes, at linebacker. Whether it’s a splash like Tremaine Edmunds or a savvy draft pick, this offseason will go a long way in determining whether the Giants can climb back into contention.
One thing’s for sure: the decisions made in the coming weeks will shape the future of this franchise. And under Harbaugh’s leadership, expect those decisions to be bold.
