Giants' Darius Slayton Decision Suddenly Looks Bigger After Patriots Injury

With A.J. Brown sidelined, the Patriots are eyeing free agent Darius Slayton to bolster their receiver corps.

The Patriots’ Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks got a lot uglier when A.J. Brown went down in the third quarter with an ankle injury, and now New England is staring at the possibility of being without its star wideout for a stretch.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport reported that X-rays came back negative for a fracture, but the early read is a high-ankle sprain. Garafolo put it this way: "The preliminary diagnosis on Patriots WR A.J.

Brown is a high-ankle sprain, sources tell me and Ian Rapoport," Garafolo reported. "MRI today after X-rays were negative.

Timeline for his return is TBD." The recovery window could run anywhere from three to six weeks, depending on how severe it is.

That leaves the Patriots looking for help, especially after trading Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans last month. One name that has suddenly popped onto the board is Darius Slayton, who the New York Giants surprisingly released this week.

The move caught attention because the Giants were already thin at receiver and gave up a productive veteran anyway. Slayton isn’t a direct replacement for Brown, but he does bring a track record of production that would help stabilize New England’s passing game.

He has topped 500 receiving yards in six of his seven NFL seasons, and four of those years included finishes above 700 yards. That kind of steady output makes him a logical short-term fix while Brown is sidelined.

A splashier answer would obviously be better for the Patriots, but at this point in the 2026 campaign, that kind of move may not even be out there. Slayton looks like the kind of practical addition that could help New England keep things afloat until Brown gets back.

Giants May Have Found Jaxson Darts Missing Piece Already

The Giants decision to release veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton has already shifted the conversation around the passing game, and it may not just be about clearing snaps for the next man up. With Malik Nabers headlining the group and Darnell Mooney and Odell Beckham Jr. also in the mix, the depth chart now leaves room for a younger player to force his way into a real role. That is where rookie Malachi Fields comes in, after turning heads in preseason action and giving the staff a reason to think he can be more than a placeholder.

For Jaxson Dart, that matters. A young quarterback can use all the help he can get, and Fields has at least shown enough to suggest he could become a dependable option as the season unfolds. The Giants do not need him to be the finished product right away, but if his preseason showing carries over, he could end up looking like a much bigger piece of Darts support system than anyone expected when training camp began. Giants Enter John Harbaughs First Season With One Big Concern

John Harbaughs first season in charge will come with plenty of familiar pressure points for the Giants, but the offensive line may be the clearest one. PFF slots the group 23rd in its 2026 rankings, a placement that reflects a unit with some intrigue but not nearly enough certainty. Andrew Thomas remains the headliner up front, and his play gives New York a real anchor when he is available, even as his injury history keeps the conversation from getting too comfortable.

Gordon McGuinness pointed to the lines promise while making clear it still needs development, which is where rookie Francis Mauigoa enters the picture. If Mauigoa can help speed up the progress, the Giants could at least start to stabilize the offense under Harbaugh, but this is still a group expected to need more time than patience usually allows in New York. Until the protection settles in, everything else the new staff wants to build on offense will have to work around that uncertainty. [Read more 🡒]

Giants Suddenly Look Poised For A Huge Week 1 Boost Against Dallas

The Giants got their first Week 1 injury report in place ahead of Sunday nights opener against Dallas, and the most encouraging line on it belonged to Malik Nabers. The wide receiver was listed as a full participant in practice, a notable step as he works back from a torn ACL and gives New York at least some reason to believe he could be in the mix when the Cowboys come to town.

John Harbaugh, though, wasnt offering any clarity beyond what showed up on the report. He kept his answer brief when asked about Nabers and declined to get into the status of other players, leaving the Giants with some hope but not much certainty heading into one of the biggest games on their early schedule.
