Giants Cut Odell Fast And It Says Plenty About This Roster

Despite a hopeful offseason return, Odell Beckham Jr.'s lack of impact leads to his release from the Giants.

After the Giants’ Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans pushed them to 2-1 and tied atop the NFC East, the team moved on from Odell Beckham Jr. The former franchise star was removed from the active roster and is not expected back with the Giants, whether on the practice squad or the NFL roster. Braxton Berrios, another veteran receiver, took his spot.

The reason for the move, according to John Harbaugh, came down to fit. Harbaugh told reporters, including Connor Hughes of SNY, that Beckham "wasn't working for us," and that the Giants did not believe he could help them this season.

Hughes relayed Harbaugh’s point this way: "John Harbaugh says that Odell Beckham Jr. 'wasn't working for us,' so the Giants made a change," Hughes shared. "If he felt he could help them, he'd be on the field. They weren't able to get to that point."

Beckham’s on-field role never really took hold. In three games with the Giants in 2026, he was targeted only once and did not make the catch before being released.

What looked like a fun storyline through the offseason, training camp, preseason, and even after he made the initial 53-man roster never turned into a real role. Malik Nabers is the clear No. 1 receiver in New York, with Malachi Fields and Darnell Mooney next in line.

At best, Beckham was the fourth receiver on the depth chart. And with the Giants leaning toward a strong run game built around Cam Skattebo, Devin Singletary, Tyrone Tracy, and Najee Harris, there simply wasn’t much room for a fourth wideout to matter in this offense.

Unless Beckham could provide value as a blocker or contribute on special teams, the Giants had little reason to keep him around. That’s the logic behind the decision, and it’s why the team cut ties with the franchise legend after Week 3. As Harbaugh said, Beckham just "wasn't working" for the Giants this season.

Giants Quarterback Shakeup Could Change More Than Just The Depth Chart

The Giants quarterback room looks different now after the club acquired J.J. McCarthy from the Vikings, a move that says as much about the direction of the offense as it does about the depth chart. New York sees McCarthy as a better fit for its system than the other options on hand, and his arrival comes at a time when the staff is sorting through the ripple effects of Jaxson Darts injury.

For a team trying to settle on the right look for the weeks ahead, McCarthys athleticism gives the coaches something they can actually build around. His addition is expected to open a real competition for playing time, and the way New York handles that battle could shape more than just who is under center on game day. [Read more 🡒]

Jaxson Dart Just Reignited An NFC East Quarterback Fear

Jayden Daniels status has quietly become one of the most important storylines in the NFC East, and the contrast with Jaxson Darts situation only sharpens it. The Washington Commanders quarterback is reportedly working toward a return soon after dislocating his left elbow, with surgery potentially pushed until after the season, a sign the team still has a path to keep him in the mix. Across the division, the Giants are dealing with a much harsher reality after Darts season-ending knee injury required surgery and will keep him sidelined through 2026.

For New York, the injury is a reminder of how quickly a promising quarterback situation can turn, especially in a division where every club is watching what the others do at the position. The comparison with Washington is impossible to miss because the Commanders are trying to preserve their season while avoiding a long-term setback, a balancing act that has haunted the franchise before in the Robert Griffin III era. For the Giants, Darts recovery is now about the long view, and the bigger question is how the rest of the NFC East handles the risk that comes with putting so much on one quarterback. [Read more 🡒]

Former Giants Special-Teamer Just Found A Strange New Opportunity

Beau Brades path back onto an NFL roster took an unusual turn this week, with the former Giants special-teamer working out for both the Commanders and Bengals on the same day before landing a practice-squad deal in Cincinnati. Brade had spent time with New York mainly in a special teams role before being released during final cuts, and now hes getting another shot in a new spot as he tries to keep his career moving.

Cincinnatis interest in former Giants pieces did not stop with Brade, either. The Bengals also added former New York tight end Tanner Hudson to their active roster the same day, a reminder that the leagues roster churn can quickly turn a former Giant into somebody elses depth option. For Brade, the immediate task is straightforward enough: stick around, earn trust on the fringe of the roster and turn a brief workout circuit into something more lasting. [Read more 🡒]
