Giants running back Cam Skattebo recently found himself in hot water after making ill-advised comments about CTE and asthma. Although he has since apologized, insisting his remarks were meant as jokes, the backlash continues.
Gerald McCoy, a former NFL defensive tackle known for his leadership on and off the field, shared his thoughts on the matter during an appearance on "The Arena," a YouTube show hosted by ex-NBA star Gilbert Arenas.
"Skattebo, you’ve got to be careful," McCoy said, emphasizing the seriousness of mental health issues. He reflected on the tragic stories of teammates like Vincent Jackson, who struggled with severe alcoholism and was found to have advanced CTE. McCoy also mentioned Doug Martin, whose recent arrest video highlighted potential mental health struggles.
McCoy didn’t stop there. He took a personal turn when discussing asthma, a condition he grew up with.
"I grew out of it," he said, addressing the misconception that asthma is a sign of weakness. "There ain’t a soft bone in my body," he asserted, challenging the notion that athletes with asthma are somehow less tough.
Looking directly into the camera, McCoy shared a heartfelt account of watching his child battle asthma in the hospital. "As a dad, watching your kid fight to breathe is hell," he said, urging people to be mindful of their words, as they never know who might be affected by such conditions.
McCoy’s impassioned response is likely to resonate with Giants’ head coach John Harbaugh, known for his no-nonsense approach. Harbaugh will undoubtedly want Skattebo and his teammates to focus on their performance on the field, steering clear of unnecessary controversies.
As the season progresses, Skattebo will need to channel his energy into football, ensuring that his actions align with the values of his team and coach.
