The Giants got a much better sign from Tyrone Tracy Jr. on Thursday than they did a day earlier.
After sitting out Wednesday’s practice, Tracy returned in a limited capacity because of a knee injury, according to the team’s Week 4 injury report. That doesn’t lock him in for Sunday against Arizona, but it does shift the week in a more encouraging direction for New York’s backfield.
That matters because the Giants could use some help there. The offense managed only 12 points against Tennessee, and while Cam Skattebo can handle a heavy load, that’s a different setup than having two backs who can actually share the work. Tracy brings something distinct to the group: he can help as a receiver out of the backfield and still take carries when needed.
If Tracy is able to go, the Giants don’t need to treat this like a test of who “owns” the backfield. They can split the workload, keep both players involved and figure out which pairings help Jameis Winston and the offensive line most.
Skattebo can take on the physical part of the job. Tracy gives them another way to attack the edge and get the ball outside.
The real checkpoint comes Friday.
Thursday’s limited practice is a step forward, but it’s not the final word. New York still needs to see how Tracy’s knee responds before Sunday’s game designation tells the fuller story. For now, though, the backfield looks a lot less thin than it did when the week started.

Giants Just Sent A Clear Message About John Michael Schmitz
The Giants added another experienced interior option this week, signing Kendrick Green to the practice squad after bringing him in for a visit. Green gives the team some flexibility because he has played both center and guard, and he arrives after being released from injured reserve by the Browns.
The timing is hard to miss, with John Michael Schmitz struggling through the first three games and the Giants clearly looking for help inside. Even if Green is starting on the practice squad, the move signals that the team is not standing pat at a spot that has become worth monitoring closely. [Read more 🡒]
Giants Face A Week 4 Problem That Could Derail Their Momentum
The Giants head into Week 4 with a chance to keep an encouraging start rolling, but the trip to face Arizona comes with the kind of injury and form questions that can quickly change the feel of a season. New York is 2-1, yet it has not escaped the early wear and tear, with Andrew Thomas among the key players dealing with injuries as the team tries to steady itself against a Cardinals group that has its own issues but has stayed relatively healthy overall.
Quarterback Jameis Winston adds another layer of concern for New York, given his recent struggles and the pressure that puts on the offense to avoid playing from behind. Arizona will be without starting cornerback Will Johnson, which opens a door for the Giants, but this still looks like the sort of game that can expose whether New Yorks early momentum is real or just a fast start that is vulnerable to the wrong matchup. Jevon Holland Is Becoming The Giants Defensive Difference-Maker
Jevon Hollands arrival has quickly given the Giants a new edge on defense, and the early returns have been hard to miss. The safety was named NFC Defensive Player of the Month for September after a fast start that included three interceptions and four passes defensed over the first three games, a stretch that also featured a key pick against the Tennessee Titans.
For a defense looking for someone who can tilt a game in a hurry, Holland has already started to look like that kind of piece. His play has stood out as a major improvement and, just as importantly for New York, it has reinforced the sense that he can be an important part of what the Giants are building on that side of the ball.
