The Giants have added another layer to their backfield, agreeing to a one-year deal with free agent running back Najee Harris, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Harris arrives in New York with a proven track record and a familiar résumé: the former Steelers Pro Bowl back put together four straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons in Pittsburgh and has 34 total touchdowns to his name. Schultz reported, “Sources: Former Pro Bowl RB Najee Harris is signing with the Giants,” and added, “Harris recorded four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons with the Steelers, along with 34 total TDs.”
At 29, Harris is entering his sixth NFL season after the Steelers made him a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He made the Pro Bowl as a rookie after rushing for 1,200 yards, then followed with seasons of 1,034, 1,035, and 1,043 yards on the ground.
His most recent stop came with the Los Angeles Chargers, where the season never really got going. Harris played in just three games, carrying the ball 15 times for 61 yards before an Achilles injury cut things short.
Now he lands in a Giants running back room that already includes Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., Devin Singletary, and Eric Gray. It’s a deep group, and Harris gives New York another veteran option behind Skattebo, who is coming off a serious ankle injury.
The addition could also force a tough decision elsewhere on the roster. If the Giants don’t plan to carry four running backs, one of Tracy or Singletary could become trade candidates. Keeping five backs would be unusual, so Harris’ arrival may be the move that squeezes someone out.
For now, the Giants have added another experienced piece to an already crowded backfield.
