The Giants are back from their bye and heading into Week 9 with a firm grip on the NFC East, but the roster still has some obvious holes. The biggest one is up front on defense, where the injuries to Brian Burns and Tremaine Edmunds have left New York searching for help before the trade deadline arrives.
That’s why a recent proposal from CBS Sports feels like the kind of move that fits the moment. Bryan DeArdo floated a deal that would send Khalil Mack, Charlie Kolar and Keaton Mitchell to the Giants in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick, a 2028 fifth-round pick and Devin Singletary.
“The Giants lead the NFC East despite having one of the league's worst pass rushers. They also need help at running back and pass catcher," DeArdo wrote.
"John Harbaugh is familiar with both Kolar and Mitchell dating back to his time with the Ravens. Jim Harbaugh would get Singletary (who, like Johnston, would benefit from a change of scenery) and draft picks to help jumpstart the Chargers' inevitable rebuild.”
There’s at least some logic to the fit. New York’s pass rush has struggled badly without Burns, and the numbers show how thin the production has been.
Before his season-ending shoulder injury, Edmunds led the Giants with two sacks. Dru Phillips also has two, while rookie linebacker Arvell Reese is next with only 1.5.
Mack wouldn’t be the same player he was in his prime, but he still has three sacks this season at age 35. For a Giants defense that needs a jolt, that kind of veteran presence would be hard to ignore.
The running back side of the deal makes sense too. Cam Skattebo is still dealing with the hamstring injury he picked up against Houston, and Tyrone Tracy Jr. is on injured reserve with a hamstring issue of his own. That leaves the Giants thin in the backfield, which is part of why Mitchell shows up in the proposal.
The Chargers, meanwhile, are sitting at 0-7 and look headed for a teardown. Mack has become one of the biggest names on the market, and with Jim Harbaugh’s team staring at a rebuild, moving him would fit the direction of the roster.
New York has already handled one major quarterback issue, with J.J. McCarthy stepping in after Jaxson Dart’s season-ending injury and flashing in recent wins over the New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans.
The defensive side still needs a fix, and a move for Mack would be a bold one. If the Giants are serious about making a run at their first division title since the 2011-2012 season, this is the kind of trade that would make sense.

Isaiah Likely Has A Big Eagles Opportunity While Giants Weigh A Change
Isaiah Likelys first outing with J.J. McCarthy under center for the Giants was a quiet one, as he caught two of four targets for 12 yards and didnt get into the end zone. Still, the setup for the next game looks more favorable. New York is favored against the Eagles, and Philadelphias defense has had trouble with slot receivers, which could give Likely a cleaner path to a bigger role if the passing game finds a rhythm.
The wrinkle is that the Giants are also looking at ways to reshape the offense, and that could affect how much they lean on Likely going forward. If the roster changes they are considering come together, the attack could look different in a hurry, leaving his usage in a less certain place even as this matchup offers a chance to build on a slow start. Giants Could Still Add The One Upgrade This 6-2 Start Demands
The Giants 6-2 start has them sitting atop the NFC East, and it has also put them squarely in the middle of trade-season chatter. ESPNs Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano have both connected New York to possible upgrades, with the front office believed to be at least exploring help at defensive tackle and running back as the November 10 deadline approaches.
One name that has surfaced in that conversation is Jonathan Taylor, a reminder that the Giants are not just protecting a good record but trying to see how far it can carry them. They have already checked on other targets and come away empty in some cases, which suggests the search is real, even if the exact move is still unclear. [Read more 🡒]
Theo Johnson Has A Giants Problem He Cant Ignore
The Giants have a tight end setup that already feels a little unusual, with Isaiah Likely being used mostly as a slot receiver while Theo Johnson handles the more traditional in-line role. For now, Johnson remains the player most tied to that job, but his uneven production and blocking issues have left the team with a question it cannot really ignore as it looks ahead.
Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports recently pointed to LSU tight end Trey'Dez Green as a possible future answer if Johnson does not take a clear step forward. Green brings the kind of size, speed and contested-catch ability that can make a passing game more dangerous, though he would still need to sharpen his run-blocking to fit what the Giants want from the position.
