The Giants’ latest practice-squad addition comes with a familiar face already attached. New York is signing wide receiver Dontae Fleming after bringing him in for a visit Tuesday, according to Giants insider Art Stapleton, and the move fits right into a busy offseason and early 2026 stretch in which the team has kept circling back to people with ties to John Harbaugh, his staff, or current players.
What makes Fleming stand out is the web around him. He already knows Dalen Cambre and new backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy, which gives this signing a little more texture than the usual depth add.
Fleming, 24, is still waiting for his first NFL game appearance, but his final college season at Tulane was his best. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound receiver caught 31 passes for 598 yards and one touchdown.
The McCarthy connection goes back to Minnesota. After going undrafted in 2025, Fleming signed with the Vikings and spent his rookie year on their practice squad before returning on a futures deal this offseason.
That put him around McCarthy before Minnesota eventually dealt the quarterback to New York for a 2027 fifth-round pick. There’s even video of the two working together at Vikings training camp earlier this summer.
None of that guarantees Fleming anything in New York, of course. It doesn’t lock him into a roster spot, and it certainly doesn’t mean he’s suddenly ready to become a real offensive answer. But the Giants are light at receiver, so the addition makes sense as a body and a developmental piece for their 18-man practice-squad setup.
Right now, Malik Nabers, Darnell Mooney, and Malachi Fields are the only receivers on the active depth chart. Charlie Jones could also be in line for more work after Braxton Berrios’ season-ending foot injury. Fleming brings speed to the table, too, having run a 4.44-second 40-yard dash at his pro day and flashed some big-play ability in his final year at Tulane.
And because the Giants and Vikings apparently can’t stop swapping names, Minnesota jumped in on Wednesday as well. One day after New York added a former Vikings receiver, the Vikings reportedly signed recently released Giants' 2026 nostalgia story Odell Beckham Jr. to their practice squad.
At this point, it’s as close to a practice-squad trade as the league gets.

Giants Rookie Is Giving The Dexter Lawrence Trade New Life
Francis Mauigoas early stretch has given the Giants something tangible to point to after making the bold move to trade Dexter Lawrence and grab the 10th overall pick. The rookie, who has shifted from tackle to right guard, has already settled into a significant role up front, logging 191 offensive snaps through three games while helping stabilize the right side of the line.
The encouraging part for New York is how Mauigoa has held up in pass protection. He has allowed three pressures, with no sacks and just two quarterback hits, a sign that the protection work is translating even if his overall grade remains only middling. For a team that chose a rookie blocker over a proven defensive lineman, that kind of early reliability goes a long way toward making the deal look more credible. [Read more 🡒]
Giants Just Got A Tougher NFC East Problem To Prepare For
The Giants were already looking at a difficult divisional stretch, and Washington may be about to add another layer to it. Jayden Daniels, who dislocated his left elbow, is reportedly on track to potentially return next week against New York, a development that would quickly change the feel of a matchup that had already been shaped by his absence.
Dan Quinn said Daniels is expected to get a full week of practice, while the Commanders also plan to assess Marcus Mariotas status. Washington has already had to pivot from Daniels to Mariota and then to third-stringer Athan Kaliakmanis because of the injury, so the quarterback picture is still unsettled, but the Giants have to prepare for the possibility that the rookie is back in the lineup when these teams meet again. Giants May Have An In-House Answer To Braxton Berrios Loss
Braxton Berrios' foot and ankle injury left the Giants with a sudden special teams question, and the first clue to how they want to answer it came even before the news around his status fully settled. The team promoted Charlie Jones to the active roster shortly before Berrios went down, and Jones handled punt and kickoff return work in the next game, giving the Giants an immediate in-house option while they sort through the wider impact of the injury.
John Harbaugh has already said the team would look internally first to replace Berrios' role, which makes Jones a name worth watching in the days ahead. With ESPN and Harbaugh offering conflicting reports on whether Berrios is headed to injured reserve, the Giants are still waiting on the final shape of the roster move, but Jones quick shift into return duties suggests the next answer might already be on the roster.
