Cowboys Draft Strategy: A Balanced Approach
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer is clear about one thing: the team is taking a comprehensive look at all prospects and won’t be pressured into drafting a defensive player just to fill a gap. Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of evaluating talent across the board, highlighting the collaborative effort from the Cowboys' front office, including Stephen and Jerry Jones, Will McClay, and others in setting up their draft board.
“We’re diving deep into every position,” Schottenheimer shared. “While we aim to strengthen our defense, we won’t shy away from selecting an outstanding offensive talent if they’re available. Last year was more about highlights; this year, I’ve seen the game film and watched these players compete, which aids in making informed decisions.”
The coach also praised the team’s success in free agency, noting the return of key players and the addition of new talent. “Bringing back guys like George and Javonte was crucial for us offensively,” Schottenheimer noted.
“And acquiring a player like Rashan Gary, who’s been impressive since high school, is a big win. Jalen Thompson’s energy and Cobie Durant’s skills add great depth to our roster.”
Schottenheimer is confident that the team’s strategic moves have set them up to draft based on talent rather than necessity. “We’ve positioned ourselves well to draft naturally and purely, avoiding the pitfalls of reaching for players.
We’ve strengthened our depth and remain vigilant in addressing any remaining needs. Player acquisition is a constant process, and we’re always ready to make moves.”
