The NFL could still step in after one of Sunday night’s ugliest missed calls, with a Week 1 review of Cam Skattebo now headed to the league office.
The play came on a critical third down during the Giants’ second offensive possession against the Dallas Cowboys. Skattebo took the handoff at his own 44-yard line and was immediately stopped for no gain.
He popped up angry and shouted toward the nearby referee, and the replay showed why: Dallas defensive tackle Quinnen Williams had grabbed and twisted his helmet. Skattebo was left with a visibly bloodied nose and had to leave the game briefly, yet no flag came out.
New York had to punt on the drive, and Dallas answered on the next possession with a score to tie the game at 7-7.
Even without a penalty on the field, the league can still fine Williams for the facemask. According to the league’s website, the first offense carries an $11,941 fine, while a second offense is $17,911.
The missed call came in the middle of a strong night for Skattebo in his return from injury. In his first official game back, the second-year back wasted little time setting the tone for New York’s offense.
He finished with a game-high 81 rushing yards and opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown on the first drive. He capped that run with a backflip in the end zone, and his physical style helped push the Giants to a 28-20 divisional win.
