The Yankees are heading into the Wild Card round against the Red Sox without Aaron Judge.
Judge was left off New York’s roster for the series because of the calf strain that has kept him sidelined. Jack Curry of YES Network first reported the news. That means the two-time reigning MVP will have to wait until the ALDS to rejoin the club, if the Yankees advance that far.
The absence is a major one, but it’s also familiar territory for this team. New York has spent most of the last four months without Judge, and the lineup will likely look the way it has for much of that stretch: Cody Bellinger, Heliot Ramos and Spencer Jones in the outfield, with Ben Rice handling DH.
Judge had been working to get back for the Wild Card round, and he pushed back on Aaron Boone’s description of the injury as a “ moderate ” calf strain. Boone used that wording after Judge went down, though Judge later said he disagreed with it. He also received a platelet-poor plasma injection last week.
“ Everybody’s moderate is a little different,” Judge said, relayed by Jorge Castillo of ESPN. “ Your moderate is a little different than my moderate, so on and so on.
So, I don’t know why he used those words. But, like I said, I’m trying to get back as soon as I can.”
While Judge won’t be available, the Yankees are getting two bats back. Giancarlo Stanton will be on the roster for the Wild Card round, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, and Trent Grisham is in as well.
Stanton’s road back has been long. He’s been out since late April with a calf strain and was moved to the 60-day IL near the end of August.
His recovery was complicated by more calf trouble, with a tweak to the right calf in June and a strain of the left calf in August. It’s the second straight season that injuries have wrecked his year, after elbow issues limited him to 77 games in 2025.
Even so, Stanton gives the Yankees something they’ve been missing: a right-handed bat in a lefty-leaning lineup. He has played 24 games this season and hit .256/.302/.422 with three homers in 96 plate appearances. That becomes especially relevant against Boston’s southpaws, with Payton Tolle set to start Game 1 and Ranger Suarez lined up for Game 3 if needed.
Grisham is back after straining his hamstring in the first week of September. He had been the everyday center fielder before the injury. Offensively, he’s posted a .211 average this year, but he has added 18 homers and nine steals.
The glove has been the issue for Grisham again this season. He has -8 Defensive Runs Saved over 119 games in center field, and he was at -11 DRS in 2025.
Jones hasn’t been much steadier defensively at -4 DRS, but he has given the Yankees production at the plate. The rookie has actually handled left-handed pitching better, which could help keep him in the lineup.
Ramos could be the one who loses playing time when the Yankees face a righty. Sonny Gray is in line to start Game 2.
