The Saints still hold Carr’s rights, meaning the Vikings would need to negotiate a trade or hope for his release. Given that the Saints have found success with QB Tyler Shough, who was a 2025 Offensive Rookie of the Year finalist, they might be open to moving on from Carr.
For the Vikings, adding Carr could provide much-needed competition for J.J. McCarthy.
McCarthy, the Vikings' 2024 first-round pick, struggled in his starting role last season. Derek Carr could be a perfect fit for the Vikings, especially since he’s expressed a desire to join a Super Bowl contender. With a 9-8 finish last season and missing the playoffs, the Vikings have the potential to elevate their game with improved quarterback play. Their roster includes standout talent like wide receiver Justin Jefferson and the strategic mind of head coach Kevin O’Connell, known for his work with quarterbacks.
While Kirk Cousins, who is expected to be released by the Falcons, is another name linked to Minnesota, Carr’s recent performance might make him the more attractive option. In 2024, Carr posted a solid 5-5 record with a completion rate of 67.7%, throwing for 2,145 yards, 15 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. Cousins, on the other hand, had a less impressive season with the Falcons.
