Tyler Shough Stuns as New Orleans Saints Become Offseason Magnet

Tyler Shough's impressive rise transforms the New Orleans Saints into a top destination for NFL free agents.

In the world of the NFL, a talented quarterback can be a game-changer, and the New Orleans Saints are experiencing this firsthand. Tyler Shough is pulling in free agents like a magnet, transforming the team’s landscape in ways that seemed unlikely just a year ago.

Take Noah Fant, for instance. Last year, Fant considered joining the Saints but ultimately chose the Cincinnati Bengals, drawn by the presence of Joe Burrow.

Back then, Shough and Spencer Rattler were still unproven, leaving Fant uncertain about New Orleans. Fast forward, and Fant is now a Saint, signing a two-year deal worth $4.75 million.

The difference? Shough’s breakout performance has made him a potential franchise quarterback.

“Seeing what Shough did last season, it’s clear he can play,” Fant noted. Teaming up with a young quarterback on the rise was a major factor in his decision to join the Saints.

Shough’s impact extends beyond just attracting Fant. New additions like David Edwards, Travis Etienne, and Kaden Elliss are also drawn to the new energy surrounding the team. Shough has not only shifted the perception of the Saints but also reinvigorated the culture and expectations within the organization.

This kind of allure is reminiscent of the Drew Brees era, where players flocked to New Orleans, sometimes even taking pay cuts, just to be part of something special. With Brees’ departure, the Saints lost some of their luster, similar to what happened with New England after Tom Brady left. But Shough is reviving that magnetic pull, showing enough promise to change how players and coaches view the Saints.

Both Fant and Edwards had other options but chose New Orleans because of Shough’s potential as a difference-maker. Edwards, who has played with top-tier quarterbacks like Jared Goff and Josh Allen, was impressed by Shough’s ability to handle pressure and make smart decisions. “There was a wow factor to some of the stuff Tyler was doing,” Edwards said, highlighting Shough’s knack for moving the ball effectively.

Head coach Kellen Moore, with his quarterback background, understands the significance of this position. He believes Shough’s presence gives free agents confidence in the team’s direction. “Tyler has a personality that grabs people in a positive way,” Moore said, emphasizing the quarterback’s role in shaping perceptions.

While it’s possible to attract free agents without a standout quarterback, it’s considerably tougher. The Saints managed to sign talents like Justin Reid and Chase Young in previous years, but having Shough allowed them to secure players like Edwards, Etienne, and Fant without overpaying. Shough has become a key recruiter, even reaching out personally to welcome new teammates.

Fant summed it up well: “Tyler doing what he’s doing has been a huge part of the Saints’ development. I’m excited to be a part of it.” The Saints are on the rise, and with Shough at the helm, the future looks bright.
