For anyone wondering what that means in practical terms, the message is pretty simple: if Hill wants to play football in 2026, Denver is the destination.
That was not nearly as obvious a week ago. At that point, the most likely outcome looked like retirement. But Hill’s farewell message to New Orleans left the door cracked open, and that changed the picture.
“I still don't have a clear answer about what the future holds, but I know returning to New Orleans is not in the cards. As training camp begins, I don't want my silence to be misinterpreted.”
Those two lines did a lot of work. They made it clear Hill wasn’t announcing retirement, even if he wasn’t announcing a return either. The silence, in other words, wasn’t a sign that the decision was already made.
And once that became clear, Payton’s interest made perfect sense. The Broncos had already been the most logical fit because of the shared history between coach and player, but until Saturday there hadn’t been much direct indication from Denver. Now there is.
Hill’s situation still isn’t fully settled. He may retire.
He may not. But if he chooses to keep going, the path looks straightforward now: Denver is waiting, and Payton has already sent the signal back.
