Steelers Interview Another Saints Coach Amid Ongoing Staff Shakeup

The Steelers continue to reshape their offensive staff with familiar faces, interviewing Saints assistant Chase Haslett for a key role under Mike McCarthy.

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to reshape their coaching staff under newly hired head coach Mike McCarthy, and the latest name in the mix is a familiar one. Chase Haslett, who spent the 2025 season as the New Orleans Saints’ tight ends coach, has interviewed for a role with the Steelers. According to reports, Pittsburgh has completed the interview process and is eyeing Haslett for a dual role as tight ends coach and passing game coordinator.

At just 33 years old, Haslett has been steadily climbing the NFL coaching ladder. This past season in New Orleans marked his first with the Saints, and he made an immediate impact.

Under his guidance, tight end Juwan Johnson put together a career year-hauling in 77 catches for 889 yards. That kind of production doesn’t happen by accident.

Haslett’s fingerprints were all over the Saints’ tight end room, and Johnson’s breakout is a testament to his coaching acumen.

But this isn’t Haslett’s first time working with McCarthy. The two have history dating back to their time in Dallas, where Haslett got his NFL start in 2020 as an offensive quality control coach.

He spent three seasons in that role before being promoted to tight ends coach in 2023 and later taking on added responsibilities as the Cowboys’ passing game specialist in 2024. That experience-particularly within McCarthy’s system-makes him a logical fit in Pittsburgh as McCarthy looks to build a cohesive offensive staff.

Haslett’s coaching journey started even earlier, with a stint at Mercer University as the tight ends coach in 2019. Before that, he played quarterback at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2014 and 2015. That quarterback background, combined with his recent work on the passing game side of things, adds another layer to his offensive insight.

Of course, the Haslett name carries weight in New Orleans. Chase is the son of Jim Haslett, the former NFL linebacker and longtime coach who led the Saints from 2000 to 2005.

Jim Haslett’s connection to McCarthy runs deep-McCarthy was his offensive coordinator in New Orleans from 2000 to 2004. So this potential reunion in Pittsburgh isn’t just about coaching philosophies aligning; it’s also about long-standing professional relationships.

McCarthy’s staff is quickly taking shape, and there’s a clear trend: he’s leaning heavily on familiar faces, particularly from the Saints. Pittsburgh has already brought in former Saints offensive lineman Jahri Evans as the new offensive line coach. Quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien, another New Orleans assistant, has also interviewed and is reportedly a strong candidate to become the Steelers’ offensive coordinator.

If Haslett joins the fold, it would mark another strategic move in McCarthy’s effort to install a staff that knows his system, trusts his vision, and can hit the ground running. With Haslett’s blend of youth, experience, and familiarity with McCarthy’s offense, he could be a key piece in Pittsburgh’s offensive rebuild.
