Spencer Rattler’s camp has put the Saints in an awkwardly useful spot.
New Orleans spent the offseason with Tyler Shough lined up as the intended starter for 2026, and that plan was never really going to change unless injury got in the way. Rattler, meanwhile, was supposed to settle into the backup role after failing to lock down the starting job last season. He’s still in that mix, battling Zach Wilson for the No. 2 spot, and the expectation remains that the Saints will like him enough to keep him there.
But training camp has complicated the picture.
Rattler has already drawn trade buzz this offseason because quarterback-needy teams were circling and the supply was thin. His name naturally came up in those conversations, especially after he showed enough as a starter to make teams curious.
At the same time, the market was never going to be huge. He didn’t show that extra gear that lifts an entire offense, even if he did make winning plays.
There were several games the Saints could have taken, and Rattler wasn’t the reason they came up short. “Game manager” fits him, but it doesn’t fully capture what he brought.
The rough outing against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when he was benched, didn’t help his value. That kind of performance likely cooled interest for teams looking for help under center, and it also gave New Orleans little reason to sell low.
Rattler is useful insurance. He can run the offense if needed, and that makes moving him feel unnecessary unless someone comes in with a strong offer.
For a while, it looked like the only way that changed was if Wilson simply beat him out. Instead, camp has opened another door.
Rattler has been the better quarterback so far in training camp, and a few of his plays have been good enough to make the Saints think twice. The work hasn’t been flawless, but he looks improved from last season, and that matters.
If he carries this into the preseason, his value could climb fast. A first-round return still doesn’t sound realistic, but New Orleans could be staring at a day-two pick if the right team gets serious.
The Saints don’t have to move him. In fact, they probably won’t be eager to.
He’s an excellent backup, and that has real value. Still, if Rattler keeps flashing, the kind of deal teams only dream about could end up landing right in New Orleans’ lap.
