The Detroit Lions will open the regular season without Isiah Pacheco, and the running back’s stint on injured reserve means he’s out for at least the first four games.
Detroit moved Pacheco to IR on Tuesday, Sept. 1, after the back injury that had already sidelined him for most of training camp. Pacheco also sprained an MCL in early August, but Lions coach Dan Campbell said last week that the knee had healed and that the back issue had made him “touch and go.”
That leaves Pacheco unavailable for games against the New Orleans Saints, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and Carolina Panthers. His first possible return date is Oct. 11 against the Arizona Cardinals, and the Lions have a bye the following week.
The Lions had kept five running backs, including Pacheco, on their initial 53-man roster, but they’ll now move forward with Jacob Saylors, Sione Vaki and Jabari Small behind Jahmyr Gibbs. Saylors made the strongest case in last week’s exhibition win over the Indianapolis Colts, when he ran for 100 yards. After that game, Campbell said he was comfortable with Saylors as Gibbs’ top backup.
“I am,” Campbell said. “I’m comfortable with those guys.
And I just like the thought of having a guy in our system, think that's important. Knows our terminology, knows our guys, knows the protections.
Just kind of knows it all, man. Understands our quarterback and how he thinks.
I just think that's important.”
Pacheco’s career has been interrupted by injuries even though he flashed big-time production as a rookie with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022, when he ran for 830 yards and five touchdowns. He missed 10 games in 2024 after breaking his fibula, and he also sprained an MCL last year.
To fill Pacheco’s roster spot, the Lions re-signed tight end Tyler Conklin. They also added guard Elijah Klein and receiver Dominic Lovett to the practice squad.
