The Browns still have a winning record at 5-3, but the quarterback situation for Week 9 is trending in a clear direction. Deshaun Watson’s status has gone from uncertain to increasingly bleak after another missed practice on Thursday, leaving Cleveland with a strong possibility of turning to Shedeur Sanders against the New Orleans Saints.
Watson was added late to the concussion protocol on Wednesday, which initially left the door open for him to get through the week and still suit up. That door looks much smaller now. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported the latest practice update from Cleveland, and it did not help Watson’s case.
“Browns Deshaun Watson (concussion) didn’t practice again today on Thursday of Saints week. Shedeur Sanders very likely to start,” Cabot reports.
That kind of update matters. When a quarterback is still sidelined on Thursday, it usually points hard toward him missing the game, and that’s where this situation appears to be headed. Cleveland has not officially ruled Watson out yet, but it would not be a surprise if he sits out Sunday while dealing with the concussion.
If that happens, Sanders would be in line to start for Todd Monken in Week 9. The matchup comes against a Saints team that is coming off its Week 8 bye, which adds another layer to a game already shaped by Cleveland’s quarterback uncertainty.
The Browns’ depth chart would also shift behind Sanders. Dillon Gabriel would move into the backup role, while Taylen Green would become the emergency third quarterback if Watson is unable to go.
At this point, the signs are pointing in one direction. Nothing is official yet, but after two days of practice updates like this, it would be a surprise to see Watson cleared in time. The safer expectation is that Cleveland rolls with Sanders against New Orleans.

Saints Give Audric Estim Another Shot With Depth Suddenly In Play
With the backfield picture changing, the Saints are taking another look at a familiar name in Audric Estim. New Orleans brought the running back back into the fold after claiming him off waivers from Cleveland, a move that gives the team another body in a position group where depth can shift quickly and where every practice rep matters.
Estim already had a brief run with the Saints this season, and the staff now gets a fresh chance to decide where he fits. His role from here will be shaped by what he shows in practice and, if he gets the opportunity, in games, as New Orleans sorts through its options and tries to settle on the right mix in the backfield. Cesar Ruiz Is Turning Personal Tragedy Into A Message Saints Fans Will Feel
Cesar Ruiz entered this season with a deeply personal reason to think about family and the road ahead. The Saints offensive lineman became a father earlier this year when his son Caiden was born during training camp, adding a new layer to a life already shaped by loss and responsibility.
Ruiz has also opened up about losing his own father in a fatal accident as a child, and he is now using that experience to speak about road safety in a broader way. His work with AAAs Slow Down, Move Over campaign puts him in a position to remind drivers about the stakes of paying attention and giving roadside workers the space they need. [Read more 🡒]
Kelvin Banks Jr Just Changed The Saints' Offensive Line Outlook
Kelvin Banks Jr. is back on the practice field, and that alone is a notable development for a Saints offensive line that has been waiting on his recovery. After surgery for a high ankle sprain, the rookie returned in six weeks, well ahead of the original timetable, giving New Orleans a chance to start thinking about what its front could look like once he is fully ready.
The Saints are not likely to rush the process, though, especially with a player they want to protect from any setback. Even so, Banks return changes the conversation around the line and gives the team a little more flexibility as it continues to sort out its protection plans and monitor how quickly he can handle a full workload again.
