Saints Suddenly Face A Browns QB Twist That May Change Sunday

Despite Deshaun Watson's clearance, the Browns are strategically sticking with Shedeur Sanders for Week 9 against the Saints, highlighting the complexity of mid-season quarterback decisions.

Shedeur Sanders is still set to start for the Browns in Week 9, even after Deshaun Watson cleared concussion protocol and remains in the mix for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Watson’s status changed on Saturday, when Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported that he had been cleared and could be active. Cabot wrote, “Browns Deshaun Watson has been cleared from the concussion protocol and remains questionable for the Saints game,” and added, “Shedeur Sanders will start the game.

Watson will make the trip. Details to come soon.”

That update gives Cleveland another option at quarterback, but it does not change the plan for Sunday. Sanders was already named the starter earlier in the week, and the Browns are sticking with that decision.

Watson’s availability had been in doubt after the Browns placed him in concussion protocol a few days after their Week 8 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, when he showed concussion symptoms. Clearing the protocol before the Saints game was never a sure thing, and even now he is still listed as questionable.

If Watson is not active, Dillon Gabriel would serve as Sanders’ backup. If Watson is active, he still would not start.

The reason is simple: Sanders took the first-team reps Wednesday and Thursday while Watson was out of the picture, and the veteran quarterback only had one day of practice before the matchup with New Orleans. Cleveland could have leaned on Watson’s experience and his previous work with the first-team offense this season, but the Browns are not making another quarterback switch this late.

For now, the job belongs to Sanders. Watson may be back in the conversation soon, likely in Week 10, but unless Sanders turns in an eye-opening performance, the Browns appear set to move forward with the rookie as their starter this week.

Saints Enter Browns Game With Two Jobs Suddenly In Serious Danger

The Saints head into their Week 9 matchup with the Browns carrying more than the usual weight of a midseason game. A loss would deepen the pressure around a team that has not won at home this season, and the stakes go beyond the standings, with the organization already bracing for possible changes if things keep sliding.

Kellen Moore is feeling the heat because of the offense's uneven play, while the roster picture could also shift quickly if the Saints come up short again. Justin Reid has emerged as a name to watch in that conversation, which gives this game a little extra edge for a team trying to steady itself before the season starts forcing bigger decisions. Saints Fans Get A Special Chance To Celebrate Two Franchise Pillars

Mark Ingram and Terron Armstead added another layer to their Saints legacies Friday, when both were inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame during a luncheon at Chateau Country Club in Kenner. It was a fitting setting for two players who helped define different eras of the franchise, with Ingrams impact as a running back and Armsteads steady presence on the offensive line giving fans plenty to celebrate long after their playing days in New Orleans.

Armstead was on hand to speak about the honor, while Ingram took part through a video message, and the recognition is set to carry into game day as the Saints prepare to spotlight both men again at halftime against the Browns. For a fan base that has watched so many important names come and go, this weekend offers a chance to salute two of the more dependable pillars of the modern Saints era in a more public way. Saints Just Made A Backfield Move Fans Didnt See Coming

The Saints have been reshaping their rushing attack in a hurry, and the latest move came with a jolt. New Orleans released Kendre Miller after seven games, parting with a third-round pick from the 2023 draft even though he had led the team in rushing attempts and yards.

Its the kind of decision that underscores how unsettled the backfield has become. Miller never fully found traction in New Orleans because of injuries and uneven effectiveness, and his exit follows the firing of run game coordinator T.J. Paganetti as well as the Saints' claim of Audric Estime off waivers, another sign that the team is still searching for the right mix on the ground. [Read more 🡒]
