Saints Stun Fans by Signing Travis Etienne Amid Kamara Speculation

Saints' acquisition of Travis Etienne stirs speculation about Alvin Kamara's future in New Orleans backfield.

The New Orleans Saints have made waves in the early days of free agency by signing former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne to a four-year contract. This move could signal a shift in the Saints' backfield dynamics, especially with whispers growing louder about Alvin Kamara potentially stepping away from the game. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport has added fuel to these rumors, suggesting Kamara might be contemplating retirement.

Rapoport noted, "The Etienne signing raises questions about Kamara's future, especially after he restructured his contract. Some believe he might be ready to trade the gridiron for a more relaxed lifestyle, perhaps enjoying a Mai Tai on the beach, as he's hinted."

While the thought of Kamara retiring is bittersweet, it wouldn't be entirely unexpected. Approaching his 30th birthday, Kamara has faced his share of injuries throughout his career.

Last season, he appeared in just 11 games, and he hasn't surpassed 14 games in a season since 2022. Given the notoriously short shelf life of NFL running backs, Kamara's nine-year career is already impressive.

Unless he's driven by a personal desire to continue, the rationale for carrying on seems limited.

In the past three seasons, Kamara has averaged 1,103 yards and five touchdowns from scrimmage. His production dipped last year, partly due to missing games, but his efficiency has declined as well.

Should he decide to return, the backfield spotlight seems poised to shift to Etienne. The Saints have restructured their deal with Etienne, indicating their commitment to him as a key offensive piece.

Kamara's potential retirement would also free up $3 million in guaranteed money for 2026, offering the Saints some financial flexibility.
