The New Orleans Saints’ plans for Ja’Lynn Polk never got off the ground.
What looked like a fresh start for the 24-year-old receiver ended Sunday afternoon, when the Saints placed Polk on the reserve/retired list. That move means Polk has stepped away from football, though the reasons for his decision have not been revealed.
It’s a sudden turn for a player the Saints had spent months talking up. Heading into training camp, people inside the organization were eager to see what Polk could do with a second chance. Instead, the team lost him before it could really evaluate that opportunity.
Polk came to New Orleans with some intrigue still attached to his name. A former second-round pick out of Washington, he struggled through a rough rookie year in 2024 with the New England Patriots, hauling in 12 of 33 targets for 87 yards. A shoulder injury then forced season-ending surgery before the 2025 season got underway.
The Saints still saw enough to make a move. They liked Polk coming out of the draft and picked him up from the Patriots last fall in a late-round pick swap, buying low on a receiver they believed still had room to grow.
That faith wasn’t just public posturing, either. Polk earned praise within the building for the work he put in this offseason, and he sounded ready to move past his New England stint.
“I feel like I’m supposed to be here,” Polk said earlier this summer. “For them … bringing me in here and having that trust of seeing the player I’m capable of being, it speaks a lot.
I just want to go out there each and every day and show them they made the right decision of bringing me in here.”
His absence over the past two days of camp, which the Saints described as excused for personal reasons, now takes on a much different meaning in hindsight.
Polk had been expected to play a major role in a reshaped Saints receiving group this season. He was one of three wideouts the team acquired shortly before last season, along with Devaughn Vele and Trey Palmer. And then New Orleans doubled down in the 2026 NFL draft, taking three more receivers, including No. 8 overall pick Jordyn Tyson.
