The Saints’ first-round receiver wait will stretch into October.
New Orleans placed WR Jordyn Tyson on injured reserve with a designation to return as part of Sunday’s roster moves to get down to 53 players, pushing his debut back until at least Week 5. That makes Tyson one of two players the Saints were allowed to stash on IR without having to keep him on the active roster through cuts.
Tyson won’t be eligible to play until the Saints’ Week 5 home game against the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 11.
The setback traces back to Aug. 13, when Tyson suffered a hamstring injury during a joint practice against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The expectation is that the injury will keep him out for two months, which lines up almost exactly with that Week 5 return window.
For Tyson, the injury adds another chapter to a career that has already been shaped by health issues. He dealt with multiple injuries in college, including two hamstring injuries a year ago at Arizona State, and the hamstring problem also kept him out of the combine.
The Saints had already taken a cautious approach after drafting the No. 8 overall pick, holding him out of competitive periods for much of the summer before easing him into training camp.
When Tyson did get on the field, the buzz was obvious. He looked like the kind of receiver prospect who justified all the hype, catching nearly everything quarterback Tyler Shough threw his way. New Orleans also appeared ready to build touches for him in the offense.
