The Saints’ most important preseason battle is sitting in plain sight, and it’s happening at receiver.
With New Orleans set to make its preseason debut, the focus isn’t just on getting the roster back into game mode. The real drama is at the bottom of the wideout depth chart, where Barion Brown, Bryce Lance and Kevin Austin Jr. are all trying to separate themselves before the games start counting for the final decisions.
That fight has already become one of the clearest camp stories in New Orleans. The Saints have four players chasing only two or three available spots, which makes this preseason feel less like a tune-up and more like a proving ground. After months of offseason work and training camp reps, these next three games are where the picture finally has to sharpen.
Brown has been the biggest mover so far. The sixth-round rookie has surged quickly enough to jump ahead of fourth-round pick Bryce Lance in the early pecking order, and that rise has come in barely a week of camp practices.
Lance, though, isn’t being written off. He’s made enough plays of his own to keep himself in the mix and should still have a roster path.
Kevin Austin Jr. is right there too. Now entering his third year in New Orleans, he remains young enough to be part of the long-term conversation, but he’s also been working hard to avoid getting passed by the rookies around him.
Mason Tipton adds another layer to the competition, though his situation is tied to recovery as much as performance. He’s still working back from offseason tibia surgery, and he doesn’t appear close to being ready just yet.
If things stay on that track, a practice squad spot may be the likeliest outcome, if anything. And if the Saints place him on the PUP/reserve list when roster cut-downs begin, they wouldn’t have to make a final call on him right away.
Even so, Tipton would be a difficult player to lose. He’s provided useful depth and flashed at times over the past few seasons, but injuries and the rising competition around him could end up pushing him out.

Jordyn Tysons first summer with the Saints has already had enough stop-and-start moments to keep the attention on him, and Wednesday added another one.
