Saints owner Gayle Benson didn’t sugarcoat what she’s seeing from her team.
Speaking Tuesday at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club Luncheon, Benson blasted New Orleans’ 1-4 start and made it clear she expects far more from the organization.
“That is not acceptable to me,” Benson said about the 1-4 record. “And it falls short of what our fans truly deserve.
I hear the frustration directed towards our team and our organization. It is not lost on me.
Our fans invest their time and their hearts in the Saints. They are right to expect more than we have delivered.”
It was a rare in-season public shot from the top, and Benson didn’t stop at the record. She directly named coach Kellen Moore and general manager Mickey Loomis while assigning responsibility across the entire operation.
“Kellen Moore and his coaches are responsible for preparing our players to perform,” Benson said. “Mickey Loomis and our football staff are responsible for building a roster capable of sustained success.
The players are responsible for their preparation and execution. I am responsible for holding this organization accountable.”
Benson also said she would not “accept this level of performance” or make excuses for what has gone wrong.
The Saints have now dropped three straight, all of them at home in the Caesars Superdome, and the schedule doesn’t ease up. New Orleans heads to the New York Giants on Sunday before returning home for the NFL’s first-ever game in France against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“I am committed to making the decisions necessary to improve this team,” she said. “Everyone in this organization understands the urgency. We must prepare better, execute consistently and correct the mistakes that are costing us the games.”
Benson singled out the Oct. 5 Monday night loss to the Atlanta Falcons as especially painful. That game came on the night the Saints and the city marked the 20-year anniversary of the first game in the Dome after Hurricane Katrina.
“Losing this year’s anniversary game to Atlanta truly disappointed me,” she said.
She also made it plain she was unhappy with last weekend’s 23-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Benson pointed to the team’s recent Ring of Honor induction for Drew Brees and said the Saints failed to meet the standard he set.
“His legacy includes a championship, extraordinary records and a lasting commitment to New Orleans,” It also includes a standard of preparation, discipline and accountability. The best way to honor that legacy is to uphold those standards today.”
The remarks marked a sharp public turn for Benson, who rarely speaks about the team during the season and usually does so in supportive terms. The 79-year-old had offered a very different tone last November in an interview with the Times-Picayune’s Jeff Duncan, saying she was frustrated by slow starts from both the Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans but still backed Loomis, calling the idea of firing him “ridiculous.”
At the time, she said Loomis does a “great job” and had been among the NFL’s best general managers. She also said she was excited about Moore and believed he had the makeup to be a “very special coach.”
This time, Benson delivered a far more forceful message, saying the Saints cannot treat fan loyalty lightly and reminding the organization that “generations have built their Sundays around the Saints.”

Former Saints Kicker Suddenly Has A New Chance To Prove Himself
Harrison Mevis brief run with the Rams ended after their Week 5 loss to the Bills, when Los Angeles moved on from the kicker and made a change that carries a familiar name for Saints followers. The Rams turned to Blake Grupe, adding him to the active roster from the Jets practice squad as they continue sorting out the position.
For New Orleans, it is another reminder of how quickly the kicker market can turn, especially for a former Saints specialist trying to get back into the mix. Grupe has already worked through stops with the Saints and Colts before landing on the Jets practice squad, and now he gets another chance with a team that clearly needed help in a hurry. Saints Face A Telling Week 6 Test With Skid Suddenly Growing
A Week 6 meeting with the Giants arrives at a tricky moment for the Saints, who are trying to steady themselves after a rough stretch and avoid letting the season tilt any further. Even with New Orleans listed as a slight road favorite, the numbers around this matchup speak to how uneven the start has been, especially with the defense failing to make life easier and the overall performance trending in the wrong direction.
The Giants bring their own storyline into the game, staying atop the NFC East after a tie with Washington while Jameis Winston remains under center because of Jaxson Darts injury. For the Saints, the bigger question is how they respond on both sides of the ball, because the recent offensive sputter has left little margin for error against a New York defense that has been forcing mistakes and looking opportunistic. Kellen Moore Just Put Saints Offensive Identity Under A Brighter Spotlight
Kellen Moores first season running the Saints offense has put a brighter spotlight on just how little play action has shown up so far. New Orleans was among the leagues lowest-volume teams in that area, and the issue became even more visible in the recent loss to Minnesota, when the offense leaned almost entirely away from one of the most common tools for helping a passing game find rhythm and deception.
Moore said there were situational reasons for the limited usage, but he also pointed to his own play-calling decisions as part of the problem. For a Saints offense still working to establish an identity, the bigger question now is whether Moore can create more chances to use play action and build in the kind of looks that make the rest of the system harder to defend.
