Saints owner Gayle Benson got a close-up look at the French government’s view of Sunday’s historic matchup before the teams ever took the field.
Benson met Friday with French President Emmanuel Macron during a luncheon at the Élysée Palace in Paris as the New Orleans Saints get ready to face the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL’s first game in France. Steelers owner Art Rooney II was there as well.
According to Saints executive Greg Bensel, the meeting ran about two hours and 15 minutes, and Macron stayed locked in on the conversation the entire time. Bensel said Macron was “exceptionally engaged throughout the discussion, demonstrating a strong personal interest in the NFL, its two participating teams and the league’s broader international strategy.”
Security was naturally part of the conversation, given the unrest in France. The country has been dealing with a wave of protests that have turned violent and led to thousands of arrests, and more activity is expected over the weekend. Paris Saint-Germain’s game against Lyon, originally set for Sunday night, was pushed to Monday night by order of the Paris Police Prefecture.
A Steelers fan event planned for Saturday in Paris was also canceled.
Even with that backdrop, the NFL and the Saints have continued to insist that the game itself is on track. Bensel said Macron offered the teams “assurances” on Friday that preparations for Sunday’s matchup remain on schedule.
The discussion also touched on the Stade de France and the work done to modify it for an NFL game, plus the growth of flag football in France. Benson also emphasized the Saints’ commitment to supporting the sport both locally and abroad.
Another topic on the table was how to raise the NFL’s profile in France, including the possibility of creating an academy for French athletes and expanding media coverage.

Saints Need Taliese Fuaga To Hold Up In A Game-Changing Test
Taliese Fuaga has already shown he can handle the kind of edge rushers who can wreck a game plan, and that matters again this week as the Saints look toward Pittsburgh. His work against top pass rushers has suggested he can stay composed against power, speed and pressure that usually force a tackle into survival mode, which is exactly why his assignment carries so much weight for New Orleans.
Now comes T.J. Watt, one of the leagues most disruptive defenders and a player who can tilt a matchup almost by himself. For the Saints, the challenge is straightforward even if the execution is not: Fuaga has to keep the edge clean long enough for the offense to function, because if Watt takes over the afternoon, the rest of the game could start slipping away fast. Tyler Shough Is Driving A Saints Change Fans Can Actually Feel
The red zone has become a very different place for the Saints this season, and the change has been impossible to miss. After struggling to finish drives a year ago, New Orleans has turned those short-field chances into points at a far higher clip, with the offense looking far more decisive when the field shrinks and the pressure rises.
Tyler Shough has been a big reason for that shift, settling in as a quarterback who seems comfortable making quick, accurate decisions when every snap matters most. His work in those situations has helped give the Saints an efficiency they simply did not have before, and it has raised a bigger question about how sustainable this version of the offense can be as the season moves deeper into the schedule. Saints Defense Could Get A Needed Boost Before Steelers Showdown
The Saints got a little healthier on Wednesday as linebacker Kaden Elliss returned to practice in a limited role after missing the past three games with a calf injury. New Orleans also saw quarterback Tyler Shough, defensive lineman Nathan Shepherd and cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry take part fully despite recent injury concerns, a welcome sign with Pittsburgh coming up and the defense looking for reinforcements.
Even with those encouraging updates, the injury report still left plenty of uncertainty hanging over the week. Alvin Kamara was among the players limited, and the offensive line situation remains worth watching with Cesar Ruiz unavailable, leaving the Saints with more questions than answers as they prepare for a tough matchup against the Steelers.
