The Detroit Lions made two roster moves Thursday as they finalized their plans for the 2026 season opener against the New Orleans Saints.
Tom Kennedy is now on the active 53-man roster, removing any lingering question about how the Lions would handle his availability for Week 1. Earlier this week, head coach Dan Campbell said Kennedy would play against the Saints, but the team had not yet said whether he would be promoted from the practice squad or added to the main roster.
That answer came Thursday. Detroit signed Kennedy to the active roster and added defensive back Natrone Brooks to the practice squad.
Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp also confirmed Thursday that Kennedy will take on both punt and kick return duties in the opener.
Kennedy, listed at 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, played in six games for Detroit last season. He handled 16 kickoff returns for 447 yards, which came out to 27.9 yards per return, and also brought back three punts for 50 yards, averaging 16.7 yards per return. His longest kickoff return was 42 yards, and his longest punt return went for 21.
Over his NFL career, Kennedy has returned 26 kickoffs for 703 yards, a 27.0-yard average, and four punts for 59 yards, which works out to 14.8 yards per return. He has also caught four passes for 36 yards. In 30 career games, Kennedy has 18 receptions for 231 yards.
Brooks started his NFL path on the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad in 2023. During the 2024-25 seasons, he appeared in 26 games as a reserve defender and special teams contributor. The 5-foot-11, 176-pound cornerback has recorded 15 tackles and three passes defended in his NFL career.
