The Saints may have a few new names ready to make noise in 2026, but one of the biggest swing pieces on the roster is already in place. On defense, all eyes are on Kool-Aid McKinstry, the 2024 second-round pick out of Alabama, who now looks like the player New Orleans is ready to hand the No. 1 cornerback job to.
That’s the view from The Athletic’s Larry Holder, who pegged McKinstry as the Saints’ breakout candidate for the upcoming season. Holder pointed to the way the team has moved on from Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo, and Alontae Taylor in recent years, with the goal of eventually making McKinstry the top corner in the room.
“It’s taken until now for McKinstry to be deemed the Saints’ top cornerback after being a second-round pick in 2024,” Holder writes. “… The Saints have moved on from names like Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo, and Alontae Taylor the past few years, with the intent on having McKinstry eventually become the team’s No. 1 corner.”
McKinstry’s 2025 season showed both why the Saints trust him and why there’s still room for a leap. He played in 17 games, started all of them, and finished with three interceptions, 17 passes defended, 76 tackles, and three tackles for loss.
The ball production stands out. The coverage numbers, not as much. On 92 targets last season, McKinstry gave up 54 catches for 752 yards and eight touchdowns, which produced a 100.5 passer rating against him.
So the résumé from last year wasn’t spotless. But McKinstry is still only 23 and has just two seasons under his belt, which is why the breakout talk feels more like a matter of when than if. Holder put it plainly: “It’s no guarantee that he ‘breaks out,’ but the chance is there for him.”
For New Orleans, that chance matters. McKinstry has the draft status, the runway, and now the opportunity to settle into the role the Saints have been building toward. If it clicks in 2026, it could be a major development for the defense.

Saints Have 5 Undrafted Rookies Pushing A Camp Surprise
The Saints brought in a cluster of undrafted rookies this spring who could turn training camp into a real roster conversation, and the appeal is easy to see. New Orleans has a history of finding useful pieces after the draft, and this group comes with a mix of college production, size and role-specific traits that fit what the team is trying to sort out before preseason games begin.
What makes the group worth watching is that not all of the paths are the same. Some of these rookies look like long shots on paper, while others appear to have a clearer lane if they can carry their spring momentum into camp and the preseason. If even one or two of them keep pushing the way the Saints hope, it would not be the kind of surprise that stays hidden for long. [Read more 🡒]
Saints Fans Just Got A Brutal First Look At The Roster Bubble
The Saints are heading into the kind of summer that turns every practice rep into a referendum, with the roster needing to be cut from 90 players down to 53 before the regular season. Early projections from multiple outlets have already sorted out a sizable group of players who look safe based on spring work, giving New Orleans a clearer picture of the core that appears headed for the initial roster.
What remains far less settled is the edge of the roster, where training camp and preseason performances can still swing a spot one way or the other. Injuries, depth-chart movement and a few strong weeks in pads can change the math quickly, which is why the bubble conversation around this team feels so much harsher now than it will once the games start to count. Saints Fans Will Want This Early Look At Topps Football
Topps is bringing Flagship Football back in 2026, and the early details should catch the eye of Saints fans who still follow the hobby as closely as the game. Pre-orders are set to open July 24, with the official release coming in August, and the product is being built around the kind of chase elements collectors look for, including Golden Mirror Variations, True Photo Variation parallels and a 35th-anniversary nod to the 1991 design.
The autograph checklist already has some appeal for New Orleans followers, with Drew Brees among the announced signers, alongside Cam Ward. Topps says collectors can reserve boxes on its website, and more information is expected as the release date gets closer, but the return of Flagship Football for the first time since 2015 is already enough to make this a notable one for anyone who likes Saints memorabilia with a little history behind it.
