The Saints left Ford Field with a loss, but they also left with proof that their rookie quarterback can drag them out of trouble.
New Orleans fell to the Detroit Lions 31-30 in overtime on Sunday in the season opener, a game that started badly for Tyler Shough and then flipped into something much more competitive. Shough’s first half was rough: he went 10 of 22 for 85 yards, threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. By the end, though, he had completely rewritten his day, finishing 35 of 56 for a career-high 410 yards and three touchdowns.
That turnaround is why the Saints can walk away feeling better about their quarterback than the final score might suggest. Kellen Moore’s decision not to play starters in the preseason raises the obvious question of whether it contributed to the sluggish start, but Shough showed the kind of resilience that has already won him over in New Orleans. He looked every bit like both the future and the present.
The defense gave the Saints a chance to make that comeback matter. Brandon Staley’s group was up against an explosive Lions offense featuring Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St.
Brown and Jameson Williams, and while Gibbs still piled up 156 yards at 5.4 yards per carry, New Orleans did enough to stay alive. Late in regulation, the Saints defense forced a field goal and set the stage for Shough and the offense to drive down and tie the game.
There was also a moment that briefly looked like a defensive touchdown in the first half. Jonas Sanker appeared to scoop and score after what looked like a Chase Young sack fumble, but the play was reviewed and overturned. Even so, the defense had already shown enough to keep the Saints in striking distance before it eventually wore down on that drive.
The bigger picture is simple enough: this was only the first stop on a long 17-game road. When the schedule came out in May, plenty of people had New Orleans starting 0-2, and for good reason.
Opening with road games in Detroit and Baltimore was never going to be easy. Still, the Saints had a real chance to steal one, and Moore showed that by going for two at the end.
They also showed they weren’t going to fold after falling behind 21-0. That second-half push, once Shough settled in, mattered. The Saints don’t get moral victories, but this one had the feel of a team headed in the right direction - even if it came with the sting of an overtime loss.
