Saints Fans Got Another Reason To Debate Tyler Shough

Troy Aikman humorously highlights the challenges faced by Saints quarterback Tyler Shough in transitioning from an extensive college career to the pressures of the NFL.

Troy Aikman had some fun with Tyler Shough’s long college journey while the Saints were trying to keep pace with the Falcons at home.

New Orleans entered the matchup looking for Alvin Kamara to rediscover some old magic, and he got a chance at that with his first touchdown of the year. But the spotlight quickly shifted to quarterback Tyler Shough, who was dueling Michael Penix Jr. and drawing questions about whether he can be a franchise quarterback.

That conversation only got sharper as the first half moved along and the Saints trailed 24-7 in the Big Easy. Aikman, taking note of Shough’s unusually long college path, delivered a line that landed with a laugh.

“I'm not sure how you get seven years of college…I don't understand college football these days anyway, but I've heard of six years. I've never heard of seven,” Aikman added as shared by Ari Meirov of The33rdTeamFB.

Shough finished 12-of-19 for 139 yards and led New Orleans in passing, but the Saints couldn’t turn their first-half chances into points while Atlanta controlled the game.

The Falcons set the tone early, racing out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind a massive touchdown run from Bijan Robinson, who hit a milestone not seen since 2008. Za'Darius Smith also suffered a scary hit to the head that raised concern over his condition. Atlanta kept rolling in the second quarter, adding 10 more points while New Orleans struggled to match the pace.

Robinson crossed 100 rushing yards and finished with two rushing touchdowns, while Drake London led Atlanta with more than 80 receiving yards in the first half.

For New Orleans, Chris Olave paced the receiving game with three catches for 62 yards as the Saints tried to find some balance in a tense spot. Shough is still working to establish himself in the NFL, where inexperience can get exposed fast. Aikman knows the college résumé matters, but he also knows the professional game plays by a different set of rules.

Saints Loss To Atlanta Came With An Even Bigger Alvin Kamara Concern

The Saints 38-17 loss to the Falcons brought a familiar kind of frustration, with New Orleans chasing the game after falling behind 24-7 by halftime and never really finding a rhythm on either side of the ball. Alvin Kamara was one of the few bright spots, scoring two touchdowns, but the offense still struggled to get much going on the ground as Atlanta leaned on Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr. to control the game with more than 150 rushing yards between them.

What made the defeat feel even heavier was Kamara leaving with a questionable knee injury. For a Saints offense already searching for answers in the run game, any concern about its most reliable weapon quickly becomes the bigger story, especially in a loss where the ground battle was so clearly tilted the other way. Saints First-Round WR Return Timeline Just Got More Complicated

Jordyn Tysons path back to the field has become a little clearer, and a little more complicated, for a Saints offense still waiting to see what its first-round wideout can add. Tyson has been working back from the hamstring injury he suffered in camp, and while he is making progress, the expectation now is that he is still weeks away from game action.

At the moment, the earliest realistic return appears to be Week 7, with Week 9 also in play because of scheduling considerations. That tracks with the original sense that Tyson would be sidelined for roughly two months, but it also leaves New Orleans in the familiar position of managing anticipation around a player drafted to make an immediate impact and still not quite ready to do it. Saints Get An Early Chance To Change A Familiar Falcons Problem

The Saints get an early shot to address one of their most familiar frustrations when they meet the Falcons, a matchup that always seems to carry a little extra weight in New Orleans. There is also a fresh layer to this one with Tyler Shough and Michael Penix Jr. in the quarterback conversation, giving the game a different kind of intrigue than the usual NFC South grind.

The setting only adds to it, with this meeting landing on the 20th anniversary of the Saints' return to the Superdome, a reminder of how much this rivalry has lived in the buildings most meaningful moments. Staff predictions around the game have only sharpened the attention on it, but the bigger question for New Orleans is whether this is the week it starts to turn a familiar Falcons problem into something less familiar.
