The New Orleans Saints have set the dates for the training camp practices fans can attend, and there’s a clear draw at the center of it all: the first real look at Tyler Shough and a revamped offense.
The team announced 10 open practices, a list that includes joint sessions and one practice at Yulman Stadium. Saints fans will also get a little more than the usual camp viewing experience this year. For Saints fans, the offense is the story. It’s the part of camp that has drawn the most attention locally and has started to pick up notice nationally, too. And even on the days when the defense wins the day - which could be most of them - there should still be enough flashes to keep the crowd locked in.
That’s especially true in 7-on-7 work, where the wide receivers usually get more chances to shine. That means chances to watch Chris Olave, Jordyn Tyson and Devaughn Vele make plays.
Tyson is the kind of player fans will want to see in person. He’s described as an exciting talent, and even when he’s working off to the side, his athleticism stands out. Training camp now gives fans a front-row seat to that.
The same goes for the running game. Not every stuffed run stays stuffed in camp, and those plays can turn into crowd-pleasers when a back squeezes out a few extra yards. Travis Etienne brings that kind of burst, and he should have chances to show it when he breaks free from traffic or finds space behind an offensive line that’s expected to be better.
The bigger picture is the talent around Shough. Camp will naturally create some good-looking moments for any offense, but this one is supposed to be more dangerous.
Tyson was a top-10 pick for a reason, and Olave is coming off the best season of his career. Both can separate and stretch the field, which should leave Shough with open targets.
That sets up an interesting camp battle between a rebuilt receiver group and a secondary that has plenty to prove.
