Saints Family Thrust Into Painful Spotlight After Chanen Johnson Speaks Out

An alleged racist comment about their daughters' skin color sparks a powerful response from Chanen Johnson, wife of Saints' TE Juwan Johnson, highlighting love and positivity.

Chanen Johnson is standing up for her family after a racist comment targeted her and Juwan Johnson’s young daughters.

The New Orleans Saints tight end’s wife shared a video on Instagram on Aug. 17 showing the couple’s two daughters with Juwan on the field before the Saints’ preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 15 at Caesars Superdome. In her caption, Chanen wrote, "They have never looked at me like that before🙃🫠," and added in the overlay, "My kids on game day acting like they’ve never seen their father before."

According to Chanen, one commenter fixated on the girls’ skin tone and wrote, "Would have been awesome to see beautiful melanin rich children that looked like him."

Chanen later responded on her Instagram Story and made clear she wasn’t going to meet ugliness with more of the same. "Taking a moment to say that there’s nothing new under the sun here, sadly," Chanen wrote. "However, I will always utilize this platform to display the character & nature of Christ as much as I possibly can."

She also urged her followers not to lash out. "I hope situations like this encourages us to pray for these people.

That the Lord reveals Himself to them in a mighty way," she added. "Please, if you ever see the evils of this world on display in my comments, use it as an opportunity to meet them in that place w/ love & cover them in prayer."

Juwan Johnson and Chanen were married on Feb. 15, 2020, and their daughters are both under five years old.

Just days earlier, Chanen had posted a very different message about her husband. On Aug. 13, she shared a tribute on Instagram that praised Juwan’s family-first approach, alongside a video of him spending time with their girls.

"Rich in life because my husband is an ‘I worked all week, I can’t wait to spend time with you & the kids’ not an ‘I worked all week I need a break’ type of man," she wrote over the clip. In the caption, she simply added, "Thank you Jesus."

Saints Rookies Just Made The Roster Battle Worth Watching

The Saints kept most of their starters on the sideline in their preseason Week 1 loss to the Jaguars, which turned the night into a longer audition for the rookies. That brought a little extra relevance to a group that is trying to carve out roles early, and several first-year players gave the coaching staff something to think about heading into the rest of camp.

Barion Brown led the rookie class with four catches for 53 yards, Oscar Delp found the end zone for his first NFL touchdown, and Michael Heldman turned in the kind of pass-rush flash that can get a young edge defender noticed quickly. CJ Donaldson had a quieter showing on the ground, and those uneven results are part of what makes the Saints roster battle worth following as the preseason continues. [Read more 🡒]

Saints Help Turn One Young Girls Fight Into A Bigger Cause

A Saints practice this week turned into more than just another session on the field when 11-year-old Cate Hargett visited to shine a light on the National Marrow Donor Program. Cate lives with a rare genetic condition that causes bone marrow failure, and the team welcomed her around the facility as players, including Dillon Radunz, took part in the effort by registering as potential donors with cheek swabs.

The visit fit into a broader push that has quietly grown well beyond one day in Metairie. Since December, the Hargett family has helped add nearly 10,000 people to the donor registry through awareness efforts backed by the Saints, giving Cates fight a reach far beyond her own diagnosis and turning a personal struggle into something with real community impact.
