The Saints’ 2027 draft picture is starting to come into focus, and the biggest answers are already pretty easy to see.
New Orleans has spent the offseason trying to patch holes, and that work matters. An aggressive approach addressed several of the roster’s biggest issues, but not every problem got solved. With the 2026 regular season looming, the team’s remaining weak spots still stand out - especially after the Saints have been hit with an alarming wave of injuries.
Back in May, two positions already looked like the clearest draft targets: cornerback and EDGE. That hasn’t changed much as preseason rolls into game 3. There’s more confidence now in Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley, with Jonas Sanker in the slot, but there’s still a path where New Orleans needs to add another corner.
EDGE, though, remains the top priority. Chase Young is the headliner on that front, but the depth behind him is shaky.
Carl Granderson has been inconsistent, Cam Jordan is entering what would be his final season, Anfernee Jennings brings value against the run but not much as a pass rusher, and Tyree Wilson is still more of a development piece. Michael Heldman is another project who could make the roster, but that’s not a realistic answer for a group that needs help now.
A young rookie in that pass-rush room would make a real difference.
The biggest shift in the projection is at running back, defensive tackle and guard.
RB has moved up fast because of injuries. Alvin Kamara, Devin Neal and Audric Estime have all been dealing with injuries, and Kendre Miller is now the RB2 despite his own injury history.
At this point, it’s fair to wonder whether the Saints’ RB2 for 2027 is even on the roster yet. That makes the position a logical place to look for a long-term answer, and possibly a future RB1 as well.
Defensive tackle is also on the rise as a need, mostly because of Bryan Bresee. He is out for the entire season, and his long-term outlook is unclear. Christen Miller was a strong pick, and Vernon Broughton could still become part of the answer, but another young addition there could help stabilize the defensive line.
Guard rounds out the list because of depth concerns. Jeremiah Wright has flashed some things this preseason, but he does not look ready yet.
If the Saints move on from Cesar Ruiz - and that remains a real possibility - they may need someone who can step in right away. Putting that burden on Wright would be a gamble.
For now, the Saints’ early 2027 draft needs are plain enough: EDGE at the top, then cornerback, running back, defensive tackle and guard.

Bub Means, Jayden Price and Jaylan Ford have all made themselves part of the roster discussion with steady work in camp and eye-catching moments in preseason games, each of them using the summer to push past the usual evaluation chatter.
Means has bounced back from injury and opened the preseason by leading New Orleans in receiving yards, while Price has made an impact in the secondary with ball production, including an interception. Ford has been just as noticeable at linebacker, filling up the stat sheet and helping create enough confidence at the position that the Saints moved on from a veteran there, leaving one more decision for the final cutdown. For a team that has spent years trying to steady the bottom end of its special teams, Ryan Wright looks like a significant offseason answer. The Saints brought in the former Vikings punter in free agency on a four-year contract, banking on a player who arrived in the league as an undrafted rookie in 2022 and quickly established himself as one of the better punters in football.
New Orleans has been searching for more consistency at the position ever since Thomas Morstead left, and the churn since then has been hard for fans to ignore. Wright's track record in Minnesota gives the Saints a legitimate chance to quiet one of those lingering headaches, even if the real proof will have to come once the games start and the pressure kicks in. Saints Week 1 Just Got More Interesting With New Lions Concern
Week 1 already had enough intrigue for the Saints, and now the Lions are adding another layer to the opener. Detroit reported that running back Isiah Pacheco is dealing with a back injury in addition to the MCL sprain that had already put his availability in question, leaving his status uncertain as the game approaches. Head coach Dan Campbell said Pacheco is feeling better, but the team is still sorting through what it has at the position.
The added concern has pushed the Lions to at least explore outside help, with veteran Kareem Hunt visiting the team as the uncertainty lingers. For New Orleans, it is another small but meaningful wrinkle in a matchup that looked one way early and may now look a little different by kickoff, depending on how Detroit handles the running back spot over the next few days.
