Saints Defense Has A New Problem Before Undefeated Vikings Arrive

As uncertainty looms over the New Orleans Saints with a mysterious illness impacting their roster, crucial questions arise about how the team will face the undefeated Vikings on Sunday.

A sickness moving through a locker room is hardly the kind of subplot any team wants on game day, and the Saints are dealing with exactly that as Minnesota comes to town.

Reporter Nick Underhill flagged the situation on X ahead of Sunday’s matchup, writing, “Subplot for today: There’s a major sickness running through the locker room. See how it impacts things,”

He didn’t identify the players involved or say what illness is going around, but the warning landed after a miserable Monday night for New Orleans. The Falcons rolled the Saints 45-24 and pounded them on the ground for five touchdowns. Bijan Robinson ran for 145 yards and two scores, and Brian Robinson added three touchdowns of his own.

The Saints’ injury reports have already reflected some of that concern. Defensive tackle Christen Miller was listed on Friday with an illness, was questionable, and did not practice.

RotoWire reported Saturday that Nathan Shepherd was also questionable because of an illness. Then on Sunday, Saints Wire reported Vernon Broughton was added late to the injury report with an illness as well.

Shepherd and Broughton both show up on the Saints’ inactives list for Sunday, though that list does not give a reason for either one. Miller is not on it.

The same inactive list also includes linebacker Kaden Elliss, edge rusher Anfernee Jennings and guard Jeremiah Wright, all of whom were ruled out on Friday because of injuries. Running back Alvin Kamara, who was questionable with a back injury, is not on the inactive list.

The reports do not say whether the illnesses are connected, but the timing is tough to ignore. New Orleans is already coming off a game in which it gave up five rushing touchdowns, and losing two defensive linemen would leave the front even thinner against an unbeaten Vikings team.

The Saints have already been through a strange stretch, from a wiped-out touchdown in Detroit to the loss on Monday night. Sunday will reveal whether this new illness becomes another issue or just a minor wrinkle in an already rocky week.

Saints Can't Let Minnesota Expose Their Biggest Week 5 Problem

The Saints head into a tricky Week 5 assignment against an undefeated Minnesota team with one obvious concern: keeping Tyler Shough upright long enough for the offense to function. Through four games, Shough has been asked to throw more than anyone else in the league, and New Orleans has leaned into a pass-heavy approach that has helped define the offense early. Against a Vikings front that can turn pressure into a game plan of its own, the Saints will need to be more deliberate about how they attack.

New Orleans is also dealing with a lengthy injury report, which only adds to the challenge of adjusting on the fly. That puts even more pressure on the coaching staff to vary the play-calling, protect the pocket, and avoid letting Minnesota dictate terms with its pass rush. How well the Saints handle that balance may go a long way toward deciding whether this becomes another step forward or a reminder of how thin the margin can be when the opponent can get after the quarterback. Saints Let Their Best Chance At An Upset Slip Away Again

The Saints had a brief jolt at the Caesars Superdome when Jonas Sanker turned a fumble into a touchdown return, giving New Orleans a swing play it badly needed against an unbeaten Minnesota team. The response mattered too, because the Vikings had already shown how dangerous their offense could be, with Kyler Murray finding Justin Jefferson for a score and Aaron Jones later finishing a drive with a touchdown run as Minnesota kept control of the game.

New Orleans still had a path to make things uncomfortable deep into the fourth quarter, but the opportunity narrowed when Minnesotas defense tightened. Byron Murphy came up with the interception that ended the Saints last real push, and the 23-13 loss left New Orleans looking at another missed chance to turn a promising moment into something bigger. Saints Backfield Suddenly Rests On One Alvin Kamara Question

Alvin Kamaras Week 5 status has turned into the central backfield storyline for New Orleans, even if the early expectation is that he will be out there against the Vikings. Kamara is listed as questionable because of a back injury, but NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported he is expected to play, giving the Saints some much-needed stability at running back as they try to piece together an offense that has already lost Travis Etienne Jr. for the season.

Even with Kamara trending toward availability, the workload picture is not exactly clear. He has seen limited snap shares this season and is likely to share carries with Kendre Miller, which makes the matchup in Minnesota even trickier against a defense that has been one of the leagues toughest. For New Orleans, the real question is not just whether Kamara suits up, but how much he can actually handle once the game starts. [Read more 🡒]
