The Saints have a cornerback opening that makes Terrion Arnold an intriguing name, but any move would come with real risk.
New Orleans already has a solid top layer in its secondary. Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley are set to handle the outside, while Jonas Sanker is the starter in the slot.
Martin Emerson gives the group a strong third option behind McKinstry and Riley. The problem starts after that.
Jayden Price has had a good camp but remains unproven in the NFL, Isaac Yiadom has really struggled in training camp, TJ Hall is still a developing rookie, and Rejzohn Wright is dealing with an injury.
That’s where Arnold enters the conversation. The former Alabama standout was taken by the Detroit Lions in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, with Detroit aiming to reload and chase a Super Bowl while its window was still open.
At Alabama, Arnold looked like a true lockdown corner, capable of thriving in man, off-man, and zone coverage. The talent and versatility were obvious.
Things have not gone nearly as smoothly in the NFL. His coverage has been inconsistent with the Lions, and while he flashed at times, he never reached the level he showed in college. The flag issues were also a concern, though those are the kind of problems that can sometimes be corrected with time.
The bigger issue arrived this offseason, when Arnold was arrested on felony charges. That led the Lions to release their former first-round pick. Those charges are obviously a serious concern, and it’s easy to see why Detroit decided to move on.
Still, because Arnold is available, teams around the league are looking into him, and the Saints are among them. From a football standpoint, he would be an excellent bet for a cornerback group that could use more talent. He has the upside to become a CB1 in the NFL, and the idea of adding him cheaply and potentially letting him compete with Riley is appealing.
But the Saints would have to be careful. They have not been scared off by off-field issues before, but this situation demands a hard look at the legal questions, the possible distraction, and whether Arnold fits the culture. If the legal situation is too serious, or if he doesn’t align with what the team wants, New Orleans should walk away.
