New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Brock Rechsteiner is walking into training camp with an uphill battle, and he knows it. As an undrafted free agent, he’s trying to turn a long shot into a roster spot, even if the name on the back of the jersey carries some weight.
Rechsteiner has leaned into the underdog label for a while now. During rookie minicamp, he pointed back to his college path at Jacksonville State as proof.
"I went to Jacksonville State as a preferred walk-on coming out of high school," he said during rookie minicamp." Then I earned a scholarship and got the starting job.
Now I'm here pretty much doing the same thing."
That confidence matters, because the Saints’ receiver room is crowded and the climb is steep. Rechsteiner isn’t just trying to crack the 53-man roster; he’s fighting to separate himself enough to stick around at all. Training camp is a different kind of grind than anything he dealt with in college, and it’s going to demand more than promise.
He has shown flashes in his limited catches, including moments where he has run past or through defenses on the way to the end zone. But flashes only get a player so far. If Rechsteiner wants to keep moving toward his goal of playing football, he has to bring that spark every time he steps on the field.
His famous family can be part of that mindset, but it can’t be the whole story. Rechsteiner can look to the hall-of-fame athletes in his family as a guide, and there’s no shortage of pedigree there. WWE hall of famers have to know a thing or two, after all.
