New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara is officially listed as questionable for Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings because of a back injury, but the expectation is that he suits up Sunday.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Kamara is expected to play through the injury. He posted: "#Saints RB Alvin Kamara (back) is expected to play against the #Vikings, source says."
The Saints are already without Travis Etienne Jr., who is on injured reserve with a hamstring issue, so Kamara is in position to handle the lead role in this backfield for a second straight week. Even then, the workload hasn’t been heavy. In Week 4, he was on the field for 37.8 percent of New Orleans’ snaps.
That usage pattern has been the story of Kamara’s season. Through three games in 2026, he has played just 33.3 percent of the Saints’ offensive snaps. He’s also logged nine or fewer carries in each of those games, and he has topped that number only once.
Production-wise, Kamara has 25 carries for 74 yards and two touchdowns this season, a clear sign that the veteran isn’t operating at the same level he once did. The split with Kendre Miller is expected to continue on Sunday, and the matchup doesn’t do Kamara any favors.
Minnesota’s defense enters the game ranked No. 1 in the league in EPA/Play, which makes this a particularly difficult spot for a banged-up back who hasn’t been featured heavily.
From a betting angle, that’s enough to cool expectations on Kamara in the prop market. The combination of injury, limited snap share and a tough Vikings defense points to a rougher afternoon than usual.

Saints Can't Let Minnesota Expose Their Biggest Week 5 Problem
The Saints head into a tricky Week 5 assignment against an undefeated Minnesota team with one obvious concern: keeping Tyler Shough upright long enough for the offense to function. Through four games, Shough has been asked to throw more than anyone else in the league, and New Orleans has leaned into a pass-heavy approach that has helped define the offense early. Against a Vikings front that can turn pressure into a game plan of its own, the Saints will need to be more deliberate about how they attack.
New Orleans is also dealing with a lengthy injury report, which only adds to the challenge of adjusting on the fly. That puts even more pressure on the coaching staff to vary the play-calling, protect the pocket, and avoid letting Minnesota dictate terms with its pass rush. How well the Saints handle that balance may go a long way toward deciding whether this becomes another step forward or a reminder of how thin the margin can be when the opponent can get after the quarterback. Saints Let Their Best Chance At An Upset Slip Away Again
The Saints had a brief jolt at the Caesars Superdome when Jonas Sanker turned a fumble into a touchdown return, giving New Orleans a swing play it badly needed against an unbeaten Minnesota team. The response mattered too, because the Vikings had already shown how dangerous their offense could be, with Kyler Murray finding Justin Jefferson for a score and Aaron Jones later finishing a drive with a touchdown run as Minnesota kept control of the game.
New Orleans still had a path to make things uncomfortable deep into the fourth quarter, but the opportunity narrowed when Minnesotas defense tightened. Byron Murphy came up with the interception that ended the Saints last real push, and the 23-13 loss left New Orleans looking at another missed chance to turn a promising moment into something bigger. Saints Defense Has A New Problem Before Undefeated Vikings Arrive
An illness has started making life a little more complicated for the Saints as they prepare to host the undefeated Vikings, adding another layer to a week already shaped by injury concerns. Reporter Nick Underhill noted that the issue is affecting multiple players in the locker room, and it comes at a time when New Orleans can ill afford extra uncertainty against a team that has yet to lose.
The defensive line has been hit especially hard, with Christen Miller listed as questionable because of illness while the Saints also had to sort through other absences on the injury report. For a defense trying to get ready for one of the leagues hottest teams, the availability picture is far from settled, and it leaves New Orleans waiting to see how much it can piece together before kickoff.
