Rams Eye Saints' Star Passer Amid Trade Talks with Chiefs

As the Rams eye the future, a high-stakes quarterback trade looms with Spencer Rattler catching attention amid Stafford's potential final season.

The Los Angeles Rams have received a major boost just ahead of the Super Bowl, with Matthew Stafford confirming his return for another season. While the details of a new contract are yet to be ironed out, it’s hard to argue against the Rams rewarding Stafford after his MVP-caliber performance. However, with the possibility of Stafford retiring next offseason, the Rams are eyeing future options at quarterback.

Enter Spencer Rattler, the New Orleans Saints’ third-year QB, who’s catching the attention of both the Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs as a developmental trade target. ESPN suggests there’s a 70% chance Rattler could be on the move, with potential fits including the Miami Dolphins, Chiefs, Rams, and Las Vegas Raiders.

Rattler’s recent season with the Saints showed promise. In eight games, he completed 67.7% of his passes for 1,586 yards, throwing eight touchdowns against five interceptions. This marks a significant improvement from his rookie year stats, where he had a 57.0% completion rate with 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.

With the Saints committing to Tyler Shough as their future QB, Rattler becomes a prime trade candidate. At just 25 and under contract for two more seasons after being a 2024 fifth-round pick, he presents an intriguing option for teams looking to the future.

For the Rams, adding Rattler could be a strategic move. Learning under Stafford and head coach Sean McVay for a year might set him up as a solid starter in the future.

But the Rams aren’t the only ones interested. The Dolphins, who are in the market for a cost-effective quarterback, could also be a great fit, along with the Raiders and Chiefs.

The Chiefs, in particular, present stiff competition. With Patrick Mahomes recovering from a torn ACL, they’re in need of a reliable backup. Other teams like the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets might also join the race for Rattler.

For the Rams, securing Rattler to back up Stafford-and potentially take over in 2027-could be a savvy move. While acquiring him might come with a price, he would serve as excellent insurance should Stafford face any setbacks.
