LSU's Top Target Makes Surprise Announcement

Rising basketball star Asa Montgomery, ranked No. 14 nationally, is poised to reveal his college decision, concluding a dramatic ascent in the 2027 rankings.

One of the fastest climbers in the 2027 class is down to a decision date.

Four-star small forward Asa Montgomery, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound prospect from Powder Springs (Ga.) Hillgrove, will announce his college choice on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

ET. His final group comes after official visits to LSU, Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and UConn.

Montgomery enters the announcement ranked No. 14 overall after a major rise in the latest rankings update, where he jumped 28 spots. That surge has pushed him into the conversation among the top names in the 2027 class.

His recruitment now comes down to five schools that have each hosted him officially, and Wednesday’s decision will close the book on a chase that has moved quickly as his stock has soared.

The evaluation on Montgomery points to a player with two distinct sides to his game. In the EYCL, he operated as a high-volume scorer with complete freedom, and the production followed: 27.9 points per game on 54/34/76 shooting, plus 10.2 rebounds, 3 assists and 3.3 stocks per game, including 1.4 steals and 1.9 blocks.

With USA Basketball, the role looked different. He accepted a supporting job as a four, bringing energy, offensive rebounding, cutting, defensive versatility and playmaking in fullcourt pressure, while also showing an unexpected hesitation to let it fly at times.

That contrast helps explain why his ceiling is so intriguing. He’s described as a combo forward moving from more of a stretch-four look toward a bigger wing. At 6-foot-6 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan and a naturally broader frame, he brings vertical pop off two feet, solid timing as a cutter and in transition, and enough skill to pick and pop, attack closeouts, work from the midpost and crash the offensive glass.

The defensive side shows just as much promise. He has good instincts, a nose for the ball and the kind of length that lets him rebound with opposing fours and stay switchable on the perimeter. Even in FIBA play, he found ways to get his hands on basketballs and make himself useful on that end.

What separates Montgomery, though, is that he already does the dirty work. He’s willing to fill the gaps, and that gives him a path to early minutes at the next level.

At the same time, there’s still plenty of room for growth. He’s very young for his grade and won’t turn 18 until July after his senior year, leaving a long runway to add more scoring and polish to his game as he develops into a versatile two-way threat.

Kellen Moore Knows The Saints Have A Rushing Problem To Fix Fast

The Saints left Pittsburgh with a running game that looked nothing like a reliable foundation, and head coach Kellen Moore did not try to paper over it afterward. He pointed to inconsistency, a lack of movement and the impact of injuries to Travis Etienne and Alvin Kamara as reasons the ground game has fallen short, stressing that the fix has to come from a full-season evaluation rather than a quick patch.

New Orleans has been searching for answers in that phase for a while, but the latest outing made the issue impossible to ignore. Against the Steelers, the Saints had just 17 runs for 18 yards, a number that underscores how little resistance the offense is currently offering defenses on early downs and how urgent the turnaround has become. Saints May Have A Painful Devaughn Vele Decision Ahead

With the Nov. 10 trade deadline approaching, the Saints may be facing a tough call on Devaughn Vele. In a season that has not gone the way New Orleans hoped, the receiver has become a name to watch because of the value he can bring as a big-bodied target and the kind of market that can develop around players with his skill set.

ESPNs Ben Solak even floated a potential deal with Kansas City, and the idea underscores how real the conversation could get if the Saints decide to listen. Teams such as the 49ers could also make sense as possible suitors, which leaves New Orleans weighing whether to keep Vele in the fold or turn him into draft capital before the deadline arrives. Saints Head Into The Bye With NFC South Pressure Suddenly Rising

The NFC South shifted fast in Week 7, and the Saints are heading into their bye with the standings suddenly tightening around them. Tampa Bay handled Carolina 43-13 behind Baker Mayfields return and a big day from Bucky Irving, while Atlanta knocked off unbeaten San Francisco behind steady play from Michael Penix and a defense that forced key turnovers. For New Orleans, the backdrop was much less encouraging, with a loss to Pittsburgh adding to a stretch that has left the roster trying to find traction.

Now the Saints have a week to reset before the pressure ramps up again. The division picture is still very much in play, but their place in it is far less comfortable after the latest results, and the margin for error is shrinking. Kellen Moore may have some breathing room for the moment, but another stumble when the games resume would only make the questions around the season louder. [Read more 🡒]
