The Detroit Lions are bringing back a familiar face to help shore up their banged-up secondary, re-signing veteran cornerback Arthur Maulet to the active roster.
Maulet, 32, already had a stint with the Lions earlier this season when injuries first hit the defensive backfield. He provided depth and experience during that stretch before being released once the unit got healthier. But with the injury bug biting again, Detroit is turning back to a player who knows the system and has proven he can contribute when called upon.
Maulet’s journey through the NFL has been anything but linear. After going undrafted out of Memphis in 2017, he signed a three-year deal with the New Orleans Saints.
He didn’t make it through final cuts but stuck around on the practice squad. From there, it’s been a well-traveled career that’s taken him through multiple locker rooms - including the Colts, Jets, Steelers, Ravens, and Texans - before landing in Detroit.
At each stop, Maulet has carved out a role as a gritty, versatile defensive back who can step in and hold his own. He’s the kind of player coaches value - not flashy, but dependable. That’s exactly what the Lions need right now as they try to stabilize a secondary that’s been hit hard by injuries.
This season, Maulet has appeared in six games for Detroit, tallying 14 tackles, an interception, and two pass breakups. Those numbers may not jump off the stat sheet, but they reflect a player who can make timely plays and provide veteran stability in high-leverage moments.
For the Lions, this move is about more than just filling a roster spot - it’s about adding someone who already understands the defense, has earned the trust of the coaching staff, and can step in with minimal ramp-up time. As Detroit continues its push through the final stretch of the season, every snap matters. Having a battle-tested corner like Maulet back in the mix could prove to be a quiet but important piece in their playoff puzzle.
