Only five days remain before the New Orleans Saints open the 2026 season, and the first stop comes on the road against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Sept. 13. For Day 5 of the countdown, the spotlight falls on running back Kendre Miller, who will wear No. 5 this season.
Miller is 24, a Mount Enterprise, Texas native who stands 6-foot and 220 pounds. He played his college ball at TCU, was drafted by the Saints in the third round with the 71st overall pick in 2023, and is now entering his third NFL season. His 2026 salary cap hit is $1.8 million.
The raw talent has never really been the question. Miller’s football résumé started with a massive senior season at Mount Enterprise High School, where he piled up 2,508 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns.
He stayed close to home at TCU and made an immediate impact, appearing in all but one game as a true freshman in the Covid-shortened 2020 season and rushing for 388 yards and two scores. In 2021, he finished second on the Horned Frogs with 688 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
Then came 2022, when Miller was a major piece of TCU’s run to a 12-1 regular season, a win in the CFP Semifinals, and a trip to the national championship game. He rushed for 1,399 yards and 17 touchdowns that season, but a knee injury knocked him out of the title game as Georgia overwhelmed the Horned Frogs.
The Saints took him as the fourth running back off the board in the 2023 draft, selecting him ahead of De'Von Achane and Tyjae Spears. As a rookie, Miller played in eight games, ran for 156 yards, and added 10 catches for 117 yards.
He flashed the kind of burst and versatility that hinted at more, with notable moments against the Patriots, Bears, and Falcons. But even then, the durability issues were hard to ignore, as he missed nine games and most of two others because of various injuries.
Those concerns only deepened in 2024. A hamstring injury on the first day of training camp wiped out his preseason and delayed his regular-season debut until Week 7.
After two games, he went back on the injury list and missed another four weeks. Miller finally returned in Week 14, a few weeks after Dennis Allen was fired, and finished by appearing in four of the final five games.
In all, he played in six games and totaled 148 rushing yards with five receptions for 33 yards.
A new coaching staff in 2025 brought a fresh start, but the same availability questions followed. Through the first seven games, Miller had 193 rushing yards at 4.1 per carry, caught five passes for 30 yards, and averaged nearly 25 yards on kickoff returns.
Then a torn ACL in mid-October ended his season after 10 more missed games. Across three NFL seasons, injuries have kept him out of 30 of 51 games.
The Saints clearly still believe there’s something worth betting on. Miller brings power, burst, and enough vision to look like a featured back when he’s right.
That’s why the team also signed Travis Etienne in free agency. With Miller set to become a free agent after this year, his role in the offense is still unclear.
But if New Orleans gets a healthy version of him, it gains a dangerous weapon. And for Miller, staying on the field may be the biggest thing standing between untapped promise and a real market next offseason.
