Jayden Price has wasted little time putting his name in the conversation at Saints training camp.
With Jonas Sanker entrenched as the New Orleans Saints’ starting STAR, Price has been the next man up behind him and, through the first few days of camp, he’s made enough noise to stand out. In a room that already has plenty of cornerback talent, Price is still finding ways to separate himself early.
That’s the kind of camp story that tends to pop up every summer: the player nobody is really talking about suddenly starts stacking good days. Price fits that mold. He’s working at one of the more important spots in Brandon Staley’s defense, and so far he’s showing he can handle the job.
Still, making a strong early impression is only one part of the equation. Being the backup STAR probably isn’t enough on its own to lock down a spot on the 53-man roster. The real path for Price likely runs through special teams, where he’ll need to prove he can help in multiple phases.
If he can do that while continuing to make plays with the second unit at STAR, he gives himself a real argument. That kind of versatility matters. It gives him two ways to affect the game, and that can be enough to get a coach’s attention.
There’s also a roster wrinkle working against him. Price is the kind of player who is likely to make it through waivers, which means the Saints could reasonably view the practice squad as the safest place to keep him. From there, they could call him up if they need him.
That approach would let New Orleans keep a deeper player at a more immediate position of need elsewhere, whether that means the defensive line or an extra wide receiver. Since STAR isn’t usually a position that requires heavy rotation, the Saints may decide they can afford to be patient with Price and stash him for later.

Saints Backup QB Battle Is Creating Early Pressure In Camp
The quarterback picture in New Orleans is already drawing attention early in camp, and not just because Tyler Shough is settling into the starters role. The Saints brought in Zach Wilson to push for the backup job, but through the first four practices Spencer Rattler has been the steadier of the two reserves while the offense continues sorting out roles and getting healthier with a few players returning from injury and non-football injury lists.
Kellen Moore is expected to keep the competition open by rotating backup reps between Rattler and Wilson as the staff evaluates both players in the system.
