The Dolphins are heading toward training camp with a crowded backfield, and they took a look at another name on Tuesday before the real competition begins.
Miami currently has six running backs in the mix: De'Von Achane, Ollie Gordon II, Jaylen Wright, Donovan Edwards, Carlos Washington Jr. and Anthony Hankerson. With those spots up for grabs over the next month, the team hosted a workout that included Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
Edwards-Helaire, 27, comes with a decorated résumé. He played at LSU from 2017-19, earned All-SEC honors and finished his college run by winning a national championship. That performance pushed him into the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, where the Kansas City Chiefs took him No. 32 overall.
His NFL career has included stops with the Chiefs and New Orleans Saints, and he has put up 1,904 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 4.1 yards per attempt while adding 94 catches for 798 yards and seven scores. He also won two Super Bowls with Kansas City.
The early part of his pro career was productive, especially as a rookie when he ran for 800 yards and four touchdowns. More recently, though, the production has dried up. Over the last two seasons, he has played in just four games and totaled 59 rushing yards on 3.0 yards per carry.
Miami’s workout group on Tuesday also featured quarterbacks Jack Plummer and Austin Reed, wide receivers Elijhah Badger, Elijah Cooks, Jakobie Keeney-James and Tyler Vaughns, plus rugby player Ben Te Kura.

The first days of Saints training camp are already offering a look at how Kellen Moore wants this offense to take shape, with Tyler Shough opening as the starting quarterback and a cluster of rookies pushing for early roles.
