Drew Brees has changed the story on how his name got tied to the Denver Broncos during the 2025 NFL playoffs, and this version matters.
On SiriusXM’s " Let's Go" podcast with Jim Gray, the Hall of Fame quarterback said he was the one who reached out to Pete Carmichael and Joe Lombardi, both former Saints assistants on Sean Payton’s Broncos staff. That directly flips the original reporting, which had suggested the Broncos came to Brees after Bo Nix went down with a season-ending ankle injury in the divisional round.
Brees laid out the sequence in detail on the podcast. He said the idea crossed his mind after the Hall of Fame call on Monday, January 19, the day after the Divisional Round.
Jim Porter, the Hall of Fame president, told him he could do whatever he wanted, and Brees said that was the moment he “flipped the switch.” He then texted Carmichael and Lombardi and asked, “You guys need me this week?”
Brees said he was told, “Are you serious? We'll go down and tell Sean [Payton] right now.”
He also said he wanted to wait until the next day, then tried throwing with his 13-year-old son in the backyard and quickly realized it wasn’t going to work.
The earlier reporting had gone the other direction. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Carmichael and Lombardi had contacted Brees after the Broncos lost Nix.
Ed Werder later reported that Brees told him he had been contacted by former Saints coaches on Payton’s staff about playing in the AFC Championship game. Payton then pushed back on that version and said Brees had contacted the team.
Brees’s new account gives the league a cleaner path on the issue. Since he was still on the New Orleans Saints’ reserve/retired list, contact initiated by Denver could have raised tampering questions.
If Brees was the one who made the first move, the NFL had more room to view it as less of a problem. The league declined to comment.
In the end, the comeback never got off the ground. Brees said his right wrist and right shoulder wouldn’t allow it, even though he admitted, “But did I think about it?
Absolutely. 1000%.
I would've loved to come back and play for the Broncos in the AFC Championship game, get my coach and a bunch of the other guys that I know in that organization, the Penner family, to the Super Bowl. Would've loved it.”
Without Brees, Denver went with Jarrett Stidham, who had two costly turnovers in a 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots. Stidham is now back with the team as the primary backup quarterback for the 2026 season.
