Drew Brees put together one of the most decorated peaks the NFL has ever seen, but that still wasn’t enough to get him onto Chris Simms’ top 10 quarterbacks of all time.
The former New Orleans Saints star spent his career piling up milestones. Brees finished as the league’s all-time leader in several major passing categories, and his résumé at his best is loaded with production and hardware. He won NFL Offensive Player of the Year twice, led the league in passing yards five times and passing touchdowns twice, and capped it off by guiding the Saints to a Super Bowl 44 win while earning Super Bowl MVP.
That kind of run usually puts a quarterback in any all-time conversation. Still, Simms left Brees off his list entirely, even though the NBC Sports analyst said he was ranking quarterbacks based on peak performance. That omission sparked immediate pushback, especially from Saints fans who took to social media to question how one of the most accomplished passers in NFL history could be left out.
What made the snub even harder to understand for many was the names that did make the cut. Fans were already unsettled by several quarterbacks ranked ahead of Brees, and the debate only grew louder once it became clear he wasn’t included at all.
The explanation seems to come down to the era Brees played in. All 10 quarterbacks on Simms’ list had one thing Brees did not: each was either a league MVP at some point or selected to the All Decade team for their era. Brees, meanwhile, was competing in the same generation as Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers, which appears to have hurt his chances of collecting those honors.
Even so, judging quarterbacks strictly by their primes makes Brees a tough omission to defend. His best years stack up with almost anyone, past or present, and that’s exactly why the reaction to Simms’ list has been so sharp.
