In a twist that could shake up the NFL landscape, former Saints quarterback Derek Carr is seriously contemplating a return to the gridiron. According to insider Jordan Schultz, multiple teams have expressed interest in the veteran QB, who still has his rights held by the Saints. However, New Orleans appears open to trading Carr as they transition to Tyler Shough as their signal-caller.
Carr, who recently hinted at a potential comeback, is firm on his conditions: he wants to join a team with a legitimate shot at a Super Bowl. "Would I do it?
Yes. Would I do it for anybody?
Absolutely not," Carr stated. "I’d have to be healthy and I’d want a chance to win a Super Bowl.
And obviously, that’s a tough thing to find."
Despite the allure of returning, Carr has already declined offers from a couple of teams, emphasizing his selective approach. Sources suggest that the right mix of a competitive roster and coaching staff could entice him back into action. With several teams in dire need of a quarterback and a thin market for solutions, Carr’s availability could spark a bidding war.
Interestingly, Carr’s health is no longer a concern. After opting against surgery, his shoulder has shown significant improvement, and he’s currently without limitations.
The Saints, who still hold Carr’s rights, ended their relationship on amicable terms. Carr had relinquished guarantees to help minimize the cap impact of his retirement, indicating New Orleans might be willing to negotiate rather than demand top compensation.
Teams like the Colts and Bengals have previously shown interest, and with quarterback needs looming for franchises such as the Vikings, Jets, and Steelers, Carr's return could be a game-changer.
Carr, 34, originally a second-round pick by the Raiders in 2014, has had a storied career. After signing a lucrative extension with the Raiders in 2017, he eventually moved to the Saints on a four-year, $150 million deal. In 2024, he played ten games for New Orleans, showcasing his accuracy with a 68.1 percent completion rate, throwing for 1,926 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just four interceptions.
Over his career, Carr has played in 169 games, amassing 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions. His experience and skill set make him a coveted asset for teams aiming to elevate their playoff aspirations. As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on Carr and where he might land next.
