Cam Jordan’s latest update gives Saints fans a reason to breathe a little easier - but not enough to relax completely.
Speaking with former New Orleans teammate Tyrann Mathieu, Jordan opened with the kind of line that immediately catches attention this close to the opener:
“I’m feeling better. I’m moving better. I’m in a lot better place than I was a month ago.”
With five days left before Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, that’s about as encouraging as it gets after a hamstring injury in training camp. It doesn’t settle the question of whether Jordan will actually suit up on Sunday, but it does point in the right direction. At the very least, it suggests he’s trending toward a return soon.
The catch is that feeling better and playing are not the same thing.
Jordan acknowledged as much when asked whether he’ll be out there against the Lions. He could say he’ll be there, but whether he plays is still up in the air. And that decision may not even rest entirely with him.
That’s where the Saints have a real balancing act on their hands. Jordan has built a reputation as a player who wants to be on the field no matter what, and he’s only missed two games in his career. That kind of toughness is part of why fans trust him so much - and part of why New Orleans may have to keep him from pushing too hard too soon.
Hamstring injuries are notoriously tricky, and they have a way of lingering or flaring back up. The Saints know exactly what they get when Jordan is healthy: a bigger impact in the pass rush and more strength against the run up front.
But that same importance is what makes the risk so obvious. If he comes back before he’s truly ready, the payoff could disappear fast.
The safer route may be the boring one: hold him out now, let the injury settle fully, and avoid the chance of losing him again after a brief return. Nobody wants that outcome, least of all Jordan, but caution could be the smarter play.
There’s also the matter of ramping him back up. The Saints won’t want to clear him and throw him straight into game action without a buildup. That process alone could be enough to keep him out of the opener.
Brandon Staley has already praised how Jordan was playing before the injury, which only adds to the case for patience. There’s no reason to rush him back before he’s ready to return at that level.
The real picture should come into focus when injury reports start arriving Wednesday and Thursday. Kellen Moore has already said that’s when an update should be available. For now, Jordan’s own words are the most encouraging sign the Saints have gotten - just not the final answer.
