The Buffalo Bills have made a strategic move by signing defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson to a one-year contract, reportedly worth up to $6 million. This addition could bolster their secondary with a versatile player known for his playmaking abilities.
Gardner-Johnson, now 27, has had an eventful journey since being drafted by the Saints in the fourth round back in 2019. After starting with a solid rookie contract, he found himself traded to the Eagles, where he initially made waves.
His career took another turn when he tested free agency, landing a one-year, $8 million deal with the Lions. Unfortunately, an early injury sidelined him, leading to a stint on injured reserve after just two games.
In a twist of fate, Gardner-Johnson returned to the Eagles with a promising three-year, $27 million contract, only to be traded to Houston for guard Kenyon Green. His time with the Texans was short-lived, as they released him after a handful of games.
A brief period with the Ravens’ practice squad followed, but Gardner-Johnson requested his release, seeking more opportunities. He then signed a one-year deal with the Bears, where he split his 2025 season between Houston and Chicago. During that time, he demonstrated his defensive prowess with 66 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble, and four passes defended across 13 games.
Now with the Bills, Gardner-Johnson has a chance to make a significant impact. If he can stay healthy and tap into his potential, he could be a key piece in Buffalo’s defensive puzzle this season.
