The Buccaneers are heading into a pivotal NFC South showdown this Sunday without two key pieces of their receiving corps. Head coach Todd Bowles confirmed Friday that neither Mike Evans nor rookie Jalen McMillan will be suiting up against the Saints.
Evans, who’s been sidelined since fracturing his clavicle in Week 7 against Detroit, made his return to the practice field this week, but it’s clear the team is taking a cautious approach with their star wideout. Considering how critical he is to Tampa Bay’s vertical passing game, it’s no surprise they’re prioritizing his long-term health over rushing him back into action.
As for McMillan, the rookie has yet to make his NFL debut after dealing with a neck injury that’s kept him off the field all season. While his return to practice is a promising sign, he’ll need more time before he’s ready to contribute in live action.
The injury news doesn’t stop there. Left tackle Tristan Wirfs, the anchor of Tampa Bay’s offensive line, is officially listed as questionable with an oblique injury.
He missed both Wednesday and Thursday’s sessions, and his status will be one to watch closely. If Wirfs can’t go, it’s a major blow to the Bucs’ protection scheme-especially against a Saints defense that knows how to bring pressure off the edge.
This game carries serious weight in the NFC South race. The Buccaneers currently sit atop the division, but a loss would drop them into a tie with New Orleans at 7-6. And with these two teams set to clash again in the final stretch of the season, Sunday’s outcome could go a long way in determining who ultimately takes the crown.
Simply put, this is a gut-check game for Tampa Bay. They’ll need others to step up in the passing game, protect the quarterback with or without Wirfs, and find a way to grind out a win to keep control of their playoff destiny.
