New Orleans Saints wide receiver Bub Means is back in a familiar spot: trying to get healthy while the rest of the room keeps moving without him.
Means is dealing with another lower-body injury in the early part of the offseason program, and that matters because the Saints have already taken a cautious approach with injured players before training camp. For Means, though, the timing is rough. Every missed rep matters when the depth chart is getting crowded.
And this room is crowded. Chris Olave is still the clear leader.
Rookie Jordyn Tyson is expected to play a major role. Devaughn Vele has already created buzz since arriving in New Orleans and after a strong finish to the season.
Fourth-round pick Bryce Lance has stood out during OTAs. Sixth-round pick Barrion Brown adds elite speed.
Mason Tipton already has valuable experience in the system.
That’s the problem for Means. He doesn’t have much room to slip, and injuries only make that margin thinner. In a battle like this, staying on the field can be just as important as what a player does once he gets there.
If Means gets to training camp healthy, he’ll still have a chance to make his case. But this latest setback leaves him playing catch-up to a group of receivers who have spent the spring building momentum.
Training camp may not officially settle his future with the Saints, but it could end up being his best shot - and maybe his last one - to lock down a long-term place in New Orleans.

Ja'Lynn Polk Could Force A Saints Decision Fans Didn't See Coming
Ja'Lynn Polks path to New Orleans has already been unusual, and it now lands him in a wide receiver room with plenty of moving parts. Acquired from the Patriots before the season, the former Washington standout is entering his third training camp with a chance to carve out a meaningful role for the Saints, who have spent recent seasons adding both draft picks and veteran pieces to the mix.
Polks appeal has always been tied to the idea that he can be more than just another body in camp, even if his pro rsum has been slowed by injury and limited opportunity. After season-ending shoulder surgery kept him out of his second NFL season, he is back in position to compete for a real spot in the pecking order, and New Orleans could soon be forced to make a call on how much trust to place in him against the other young receivers fighting for snaps. NFL Legend Just Sent A Big Message About Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough got a noteworthy spotlight at Peyton Mannings passing academy, where the NFL great had plenty of praise for the Saints quarterback after his rookie-year experience. Mannings message centered on something New Orleans has been trying to build for years: stability, with Shough now getting a chance to grow in the same offensive environment rather than starting over.
That continuity matters in a real way for the Saints, especially with Kellen Moore and Doug Nussmeier back in the same setup and Shough already showing chemistry with Chris Olave, Devaughn Vele and Juwan Johnson. After his late-season run gave the organization a clearer look at what he can do, the next step is seeing how far that comfort level carries when the offense turns the page again. [Read more 🡒]
