Shedeur Sanders is suddenly on deck to start for the Cleveland Browns, and the timing couldn’t be more striking.
Deshaun Watson has been placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol after reporting symptoms Tuesday morning, putting Sanders in line to make his first start of the season Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Sanders has appeared in two games this season as Watson’s backup, but this would be his first turn leading the offense in 2026.
Watson’s status changed after the hit he took in Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He absorbed a helmet-to-helmet shot, went through a concussion evaluation with an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant, and was cleared to return.
The Browns then had their medical staff check him again after the game and once more Monday morning. He passed both of those evaluations too and still showed no symptoms.
That changed Tuesday morning, when Watson reported that concussion symptoms had started Monday night. The team immediately put him into the protocol, opening the door for Sanders.
The Browns also have Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green on the roster, but Sanders is the one now positioned to take over if Watson can’t go. For a 5-3 Cleveland team trying to stay close to the 6-2 Steelers and 5-2 Bengals, the timing matters. Another loss right now would hit hard in the playoff race.
Sanders already has some experience stepping in. He started the final seven games of his rookie season in 2025, and now he may be asked to do it again under very different circumstances.

Saints Suddenly Have A Jordyn Tyson Question Fans Care About
A long wait for Jordyn Tyson is finally easing up, and the Saints now have a real rookie watch on their hands. The first-round wide receiver is back on the practice field after dealing with a hamstring injury that kept him on injured reserve, giving New Orleans its first meaningful sign that his season might be about to start taking shape.
His practice window is open now, which gives the Saints up to 21 days to work him back toward game readiness, but there is still no clear answer on whether he will be available in Week 9. Even so, this is a notable step for a player the team clearly expected to factor into its plans, and it puts Tyson closer to an NFL debut that had been pushed off longer than anyone around the roster would have liked. Saints Just Got A New Reason To Take Shedeur Personally
Shedeur Sanders may be on the verge of his first start of the season for the Browns, and the attention around him is already drifting beyond the huddle. During a media session, Sanders was asked about what he had seen from the Saints defense, but he sidestepped the question with a smile and a comment about maturing, continuing a pattern of unusual interactions that have followed him before.
For New Orleans, a moment like that can linger. Even without a direct shot, a non-answer can be read as a slight, especially when a young quarterback is about to step into a spotlight game against a defense that will be eager to make its own statement. Whether Sanders meant anything by it or not, the Saints have another little edge to keep in mind as they prepare. [Read more 🡒]
Falcons Loss Just Put The NFC South Back In Play For Saints
Atlantas shutout loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday gave the NFC South a little more life, at least from New Orleans point of view. The Falcons were blanked 16-0, a result that tightened a division race that has been lumpy all season and kept the Panthers sitting atop the standings for the moment.
For the Saints, the math is suddenly worth watching again. They are still in the mix behind Atlanta and Tampa Bay, and the next stretch matters as much for divisional positioning as it does for playoff hopes. If New Orleans takes care of the Browns and gets some help elsewhere, the standings could look very different by the end of the week. [Read more 🡒]
